Both films stand as divisive entries in their respective film series but which one do you consider to be better?

Returns, easily. It's weird but it isn't that much of a departure from the previous entry. TDKR is a nonsensical train wreck that shits on the previous films in the series. The movie makes no sense at all and feels completely rushed and half assed from top to bottom.

Batman Returns - 10/10 Dark Knight Rises - 5/10
Returns is a much more entertaining and stylish film with a far better Catwoman. Returns wins for me. By far.

TDKR. Returns is just a Tim Burton movie inconvenienced by the fact that it needed to include Batman....

Not a fan of either film, but I can get behind the notion that Returns is the more visually compelling and enjoyable of the two. It is not an easy film to judge as it is so out-there, so absurd, so in-your-face, so dark, so twisted, so comedic, I just...Don't know what to make of it. It just tosses all screenwriting rules and visually consistency out the window its not easy to keep track of what it does wrong or right. As strange as this may sound, an early draft of it was even MORE crazy...
TDKR tries too hard to be epic and keeps hammering the notion that its Nolan's last Batman movie any time it gets the chance too, it has a lot going on but feels too slow that it kind splits each subplot into its own movie, feeling less like one giant narrative. The action scenes are nothing to get excited about, and the choreography isn't very good either - Looking at Batman and Bane's 'epic' brawl in the sewers. So many better ways to stage it, but Nolan took the easy way out by having quick cuts and obvious sound effects. It is technically the better written and directed of the two Batman movies and feels more like a Batman movie than Returns does, but even so...It feels like a chore to watch a lot of the time, and that Nolan just wanted to wrap everything up as soon as he could because he wanted to be done with the franchise. With Returns, you can feel Burton's creativity expand and become almost limitless, even when the pay-off is off.

The Dark Knight Rises easily. It is messy but it has a lot on it's mind (too much in fact) and it is very well made and extremely intense with one of the most memorable villains of the past 20 years. The movie has many great themes such as class warfare, guilt and redemption and love and revenge etc. It's a very emotionally engaging movie.
The problem is that I think Nolan was in a bit of a hurry and was kind of sick of making Batman movies.
I like Batman Returns too though but it's just silly nonsense and one of the biggest examples of a director indulging himself.

Rises.
while I really hate the inclusion of Talia in the film......it doesn't compare to the anger I felt as a kid watching the penguin ride a toy car version of the batmobile, in his rubber duck, the CD scene (that's not how a CD works BRUCE), and the side stuff with Shrek and Penguin...........and I was a kid.
now I love the relationship between Bruce and Selina more in Returns, and as a kid I thought it was so tragic, but it wasn't enough to make the movie anything more than okay.

Yes and no. Begins - 5/10 The Dark Knight - 9/10 Begins I liked when I first saw it but It didnt really last over time. I got bored with it fast. Dark Knight on the other hand is fantastic. Mainly due to Heath Ledger. I always hated the ending though. Thats why its not a 10.

Batman Returns easily. TDKR was a big, bloated turd of a movie. And oh the horror, to a lesser extent so was its predecessor.

Love both, more so than their predecessors. Can't choose between them tbh.
