Sooo..
All these years later I'm watching 'O.J.: Made in America' on A&E (Arts and Entertainment).
And it's terrific and has held my attention even after you know the whole story.
Which begs the question for me - is the O.J. case the most fascinating sports related 'side story' in the history of sports.
I love stories of fallen heroes - Lance Armstrong, Mike Tyson, the baseball PED scandals - fascinating stuff.
Has any sports related story captured the world's attention like O.J.?

I remember the O.J. story like it was yesterday. I was riveted to the TV for the duration, from the car chase scene with the cops and O.J.'s Ford Bronco to the "not guilty" verdict. I have to admit, I was rooting for O.J. the whole time.

really great and fascinating documentary.
i would say yes to your question, as the story: - encompassed news, sports, entertainment and politics. - was the first major taste of the people's thirst for reality tv. - was controversial from beginning to end, including his acquittal. - still reverberates after so many years.

It was divisive and compelling to the general public because so much of the case focused on race. Frankly, that seems to have been the focus of every documentary they've ever done on it. I didn't care then and I don't care now. In my opinion he got away with murder, but he wasn't the first or last celebrity to do so.

he was found not guilty of the murder. he's not guilty. it's not that complex. I never knew Marcus Allen was doinkin' his wife. Brings up an entirely new dilemna/story - i.e. cheating spouses, friends you regard brothers, where one draws the line, etc etc. Just fascinating stuff to this day. Another poster above had brought this up - guess it could be pretty much considered the first reality tv?

he was found not guilty of the murder. he's not guilty. it's not that complex. One can have both done the crime and be found not guilty.

Has any sports related story captured the world's attention like O.J.? I don't think so. The (mis)adventures of Tiger Woods seem like a distant second.

Nothing comes close. The combination of O.J.'s fame (even outside of Football) and the nature of his crime. Plenty of athletes who murdered. Rae Carruth, Oscar Pistorius, Aaron Hernandez. 19th century catcher Marty Bergen butchered his family then nearly decapitated himself with a razor. Another 19th century ballplayer, Pacer Smith, was hung for killing his daughter and sister-in-law. With the possible exception of Pistorius, none even came close to Simpson's fame.
I'm not sure if there is a comparable case in European sports.

I actually had doubt at the time, maybe I didn't want to believe. I loved the guy, alot of people did but I know better now I have no doubt he is a cold blooded killer.

At least if they left OJ out, he can resume his search for the real killer.

I mean, you KNOW that, right? a lot of people think his son was involved in some way..... curious to see how this 'parole' hearing goes when he tried to rob back his own memorabilia which he's been in jail for. been all over the news. fascinating figure to this day.
