It is the characters arguing that makes the tension, yes they are annoying but lots of people can be annoying. Ppl get moody and irritating and they say stupid things, and they were lost and cold and hungry, that is what happens. You just described naterdawg perfectly. And, congratulations, you just described yourself.

Pretty bad movie. I saw it in the movie theater when it first came out.
They had a really cool idea for a horror movie, and then proceeded to do nothing with it. It's like they thought a cool idea for a movie was all that was needed and didn't bother to build anything around it.

That is the beauty of this movie, it is simple and effective Three normal people go in search of scary legend and slowly their minds are destroy They just give some back story on the scary legend then your imagination can create horror. Very effective to some

Who said he was doing it willfully? He was standing there on purpose. What are you missing? I thought he had fallen under the witch's spell or something like that. After all they were in her house and if I remember correctly the walls were full of some magical carvings. I liked the TV pseudo documentary "Curse of the Blair Witch" better than the movie. Despite BWP being disappointing I would have liked them do another one because the mythology was interesting. Instead producers opted for Book of Shadows which pretty much ignored it.

You know, I need to rewatch it, then, because I thought the story was that the witch simply told the boy in the original scenario to stand in the corner.

It's at the top of my list. One of my favorite movies. Wish I had been as brilliant to come up with the idea. And it started an entire onslaught of found footage/docu-horror movies.

It was trash that suckered in millions of people. How can you say this is the "best," when The Exorcist stands so tall? Come on. I think this a wee bit harsh--parts of Blair Witch can be a tad enjoyable, and they are able to replicate the "recorded home movie" aspect of it well--but I pretty much agree that it's not a good movie. My favorite review of it, from Andrew Sarris: observer.com/1999/08/whos-afraid-of-the-blair-witch-project/Just a few lines: "... The Blair Witch Project represents the ultimate triumph of the Sundance scam: Make a heartless home movie, get enough critics to blurb in near unison 'scary,' and watch the suckers flock to be fleeced." "...they [the other members of the 'team'] never seemed too impressed with Heather's capabilities, which makes one wonder why they trusted her to lead them into an unknown forest, all three of them carrying backpacks so heavy and bulky that Hannibal would have hesitated loading them on his elephants when he was crossing the Alps toward Rome." "'Go back!' I kept saying to myself. 'Go back!' But Heather, the bitch, was in no mood to listen. She thought she knew everything. ... she considers herself superior to everyone around her, and that includes Mike and Josh, whom she treats as her slow-witted slaves." "...I don't give The Blair Witch Project extra points for being so cheaply made. Many of my esteemed colleagues have chosen to use this unexpected money-maker as a club to beat the overpriced, overgadgety, overdigitalized, and overhyped mainstream turkeys gobbling up the multiplexes. Emotional emptiness, unfortunately, is unacceptable in a movie, whatever its budget." To counter these hilarious, if nasty, thoughts, I've got to say that I liked the beginning, in which the characters are interviewing the townsfolk, and the very end, for which one has to give the filmmakers credit for giving us a truly spooky, evocative image. Besides that? I really do find it as dull as dishwater. Ghostwatch attempted something similar years earlier and achieved far, far better. Besides being a million times better written, directed, and acted than Blair Witch, it also succeeds, for those who (unlike Sarris) like that sort of thing, in being much scarier.

Very effective to some That's what I like about the movie--the idea and marketing are brilliant, let me be the first to say, and what the filmmakers want to do is clever--but it seems to me that they never pull it off. The urban legend part of the Blair Witch is put on the back burner until the very end (that last shot), in favor of our seeing "...three film-student types traipsing off cluelessly into an unfamiliar forest with a reported history of gruesome violence..." as they curse, spit, do stupid things, and generally act like morons. Boy, now I'm being overly critical. Sorry!

I prefer the fake documentary too: it truly uses the mythology to the fullest. I think that's perhaps what the filmmakers should have done in the movie.

People say this movie isn't scary, they think people who are scared by it are wrong.
I have seen all of the horror movies and this is one of the scary ones

Also I think what is scary about this movie is that witches exist and woods exist
Witches + woods = scary

Stupid People Get What They Deserve: The Movie All characters were annoying right out of the gate. How did they manage to get so lost anyway? It didn't seem like a big forest. Throwing the map away "because it wasn't helping" was pretty clever move. "Fuck fuck fuck we are so fucking lost oh fuck" kind of dialogue doesn't inspire any sympathy. I could go on. To be honest though I found some of the night time footage very atmospheric and the movie as a whole gets better during the second half. Edit out 90% of the bickering and you'll probably end up with a very decent short movie. It is the characters arguing that makes the tension, yes they are annoying but lots of people can be annoying. Ppl get moody and irritating and they say stupid things, and they were lost and cold and hungry, that is what happens. they were normal ppl and you get watch their minds explode with fear. Is v good Also they get lost in woods because supernatural events are influencing then Yes, it's true, people can be annoying and irritating, and they sometimes say stupid things...but to NEVER DROP THE CAMERA during these emotional tirades immediately takes us out of the drama and makes us think, "this is a movie." Nobody in real life would freak out like those characters and still be filming. Just wouldn't happen.
