With the sequel to the actual graphic novel coming soon, will the DCEU try to put them in their schedule?
I read the original a long time ago. I don't remember anything about it, other than it was good. I'm about half way through re-reading it now and they just fit the DCEU. Obviously they're doing that miniseries on them and Snyder made his own adaptation several years back, but I think that they could add a layer of hopelessness.
I don't know if that's a good thing to you, but I could get behind a Dr. Manhattan appearance. It would mess with the timeline, but it could also add some complexity.

Is it hypocritical that despite liking Snyder's adaptation, I've boycotted all other Watchmen related stuff that DC have done? I don't include the old DC Heroes RPG stuff that was Watchmen related, as that was done with Moore's input before his falling out with DC. Everything else, though, I just don't consider it canon as Moore seems vehemently opposed to anyone else's adding to the Watchmen universe, which is, or at least was originally its own thing outside of mainstream DC. In fact, iirc there was an interview where he said DC are bereft of ideas and said that's why they've been mining a lot of the older acclaimed works such as Watchmen and crossing it over with the regular DC Universe. (Mind you, although I'm not a big fan of Geoff Johns, he did a decent job of dovetailing and expanding Moore's old GL stuff into the current GL mythos.) (If I ever see the Before Watchmen stuff in my local library I may peruse it, but still won't consider it a part of the story proper.)
It's kind of ironic that back in the 90s Gibbons said that readers can have their own ideas about what The Comedian did in Vietnam, etc, but then later worked on Before Watchmen himself, although at least he was one of the co-creators, and also I think he's had more of a pragmatic "work for hire" approach to all the properties he's worked on, compared to Moore's protectiveness towards his (co) creations. (I can see both sides.)
Back to Watchmen in the DCEU, I think that it's still better as a self-contained story in its own universe. The DCEU should be able to stand on its own, imo, especially when they have characters rich with potential like the GLC, The New Gods, etc, that they've yet to properly utilize. Likewise, I'm not sure if the Watchmen tv series that's been suggested before would be a good idea. When Snyder says he's a fan of the original graphic novel/series, but then is open to working on a tv series, I'm not sure what to think, I expect Alan Moore wouldn't be impressed although perhaps he (Moore) is past caring by now.
