A great favourite of mine is the unintentionally hilarious Zero Hour (1957), Determined, overcoming the demons of his past Ted Stryker (Andrews) saves the day...

Looking at the Google images of Dana Andrews, I was struck with there being so few of him smiling ! In the rare smiling pictures, he has a nice smile !

Young Dana as he looked in Jean Renoir's Swamp Water 1941. Older Dana as he looked in Elia Kazan's The Last Tycoon 1976.

Dana in one of his happier movies (with Jeanne Crain) State Fair 1945, his singing voice was dubbed, rumour has it that his singing voice wasn't bad, in fact it was very good, too good for the character he played, that's why he was dubbed, plus the movie already had one crooner that shouldn't be outshined (Dick Haymes).

Dana was opera trained prior to entering films. He did sing in one picture -- as one of the happy Russian peasants during the town picnic sequence just before the Germans invade in THE NORTH STAR in 1943.
He did not squawk about being dubbed in STATE FAIR, stating that it was giving work to someone else who may have needed the job.
I did hear him sing one time (at the insistence of host Max Showalter) at a local theater fundraiser before a showing of BEST YEARS -- and very good he was. I got an invite to Max's home afterwards and got to spend quality time with Mr. Andrews -- very nice guy.
We talked at length about his film for Elia Kazan -- BOOMERANG! -- which had a special family connection to me. My grandfather was an extra as a member of the jury in the trial scenes where Dana played a thoughtful and courageous state's attorney (based on an actual murder case).

And even more than a nice guy, Tele -- he was a real quality standup guy. A recovering alcoholic, he devoted much of his later life helping others so afflicted, and used his fame by doing public service promos.

A recovering alcoholic, he devoted much of his later life helping others so afflicted, and used his fame by doing public service promos. Good to know! I've heard that alcohol nearly ruined his career. as it did for many actors and actresses before and after. An old movie guide said that his career was haltered becuse of health troubles, but that might then be a rewrite of the real troubles. In Johnny Reno 1966, he seems sometimes to have trouble with saying his lines, "as a drunk trying to sound sober", but it might have only been that all alcohol he drank before affected his voice. Being with Lon Chaney Jr can't have helped, since he was a famous alcoholic.

He once related a story that he was somewhat hung over when they were shooting the scene in BEST YEARS where he is being driven to his wife's apartment on his first night home. 'Fred Derry' exits the car and bumps his head twice. Director Wyler kept making him do it over and over until Myrna Loy and Teresa Wright begged Willy to stop it.

Andrews joins the list of those performers fortunate enough to work on several occasions with the same director:
Wayne & Ford / Stewart & Capra / Tracy & Kramer / Lemmon & Wilder / Brando & Kazan / DeNiro & Scorsese / Davis & Wyler / Streep & Nichols, etc.
With Dana it was Otto Preminger in LAURA / FALLEN ANGEL / DAISY KENYON / WHERE THE SIDEWALK ENDS / IN HARM'S WAY.
Apparently he was one actor the tyrannical filmmaker got along with.
