The wider the disparity, the more interesting... I love Robert Altman, but there are a handful of his movies where I couldn't get past the 30 minute mark.. But he's made my #3 all-time (Nashville) and "McCabe and Mrs. Miller" which would make my Top-20...
Fellini made "La Strada" - my #2.... I liked his first one "i, vitelloni" and "Nights of Cabiria" (it's mostly Giulieta).

I think it's actually more rare for me to find a director who's work I unanimously love. Spielberg has Schindler's List and Jaws on one side, War Horse and The Lost World on another. Scorsese has made several masterpieces, but I utterly hated Shutter Island and Cape Fear. Francis Ford Coppola has probably the biggest disparities. Compare anything he did in the 70s to Jack.

James Cameron - love Terminator & Aliens, hate Titanic & Avatar
Mel Gibson - Apocalypto is outstanding, Braveheart absolute shite
Spielberg - capable of brilliance like Raiders, Jaws and Schindler's List yet churned out cack like Hook and Temple Of Doom

John Carpenter made Escape From New York and The Thing, but also Ghosts of Mars.
Ridley Scott - Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator - yay! Hannibal, Exodus, GI Jane - nay!

Tim Burton. Love most of his early stuff but I hate almost everything he's done since Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

I love Persona but can't get into much else by Bergman.

M. Night Shyamalan. Dude is all over the place. I liked "Sixth Sense" loved "Signs" and thought "Unbreakable" was good. Gave "The Village" a fair shot, but that's where he started going off the rails for me. "Split" was an encouraging step back in the right direction though.
Agreed on Tim Burton. Don't know what happened post-"Big Fish." Coincidentally, I largely feel the same about Danny Elfman.

I for one have never seen a woody allen film I can't stand, although I haven't bothered with most of his films that are more recent. I like citizen kane, it's ok but his second movie not so much. If he ever made a stupid and pointless film that would be it. I don't care how much they changed it without him, it still would have sucked imo. That was not the film to make after citizen kane. Omg, stay away from that film. I do not like the way he adapts novels into films at all.

Gus Van Sant is the 1st one that comes to mind.
I fucking LOVE Good Will Hunting , Milk & My Own Private Idaho but I absolutely despise some of his other films, most notably his idiotic Psycho remake , Last Days & Gerry. Such a hit or miss director

For me I'll say Kubrick, Bergman(for now), and PTA.

Joss Whedon has made some of my favorite things and some stuff that i find quite vexing.
i both like and dislike most of Peter Jackson's work simultaneously. he has great ideas and cinematography but he seems to struggle in assembling his footage into watchable films. the Frighteners' director's cut is the only time i can recall the DC being detrimental to the film. even his older gore comedies suffer their own humor.

After seeing Moonrise Kingdom, I refuse to watch any other of Wes Anderson's films--The Movie was an atrocity

Most directors.
Sidney Lumet is the best example though.

Spielberg - Hook, War of the Worlds... I won't go near War Horse, the title alone is a turnoff.
Scott - Alien Covenant, Robin Hood... not awful, just sleep inducing.
I've 5 of theirs combined in my top 50.

Ridley Scott made one of my all-time favourites - Alien (1979) - and then decades later went and made the ignominious mess that is Prometheus (2012).

Ridley Scott. I can't believe he made that debacle The Counselor. I like most of his movies though.

Snyder.
I like Dawn of the Dead, 300, Watchmen and Man of Steel.
Sucker Punch and BvS was ambitious as hell, but missed the mark for me.

Usually the Cohen Bros can do no wrong. But Hail Ceaser was a pointless mess. Not a " bad" movie per se. Just not interesting at all.
