It seems that horror and science fiction go hand-in-hand; people who like horror are also sci-fi fanatics. There are certainly some similarities between the two genres, but myself I'm strictly a horror guy. Even though I'm not a sci-fi fan there are some exceptions. For instance I liked Total Recall and Starship Troopers. But for the most part sci-fi is just not my cup of tea. When it come to stuff like Star Wars or Star Trek, forget it.
So I'm curious, are there any others out there who like horror but not science fiction? Do you think it's okay to like one but not the other?

Nathan on The Hysteria Continues podcast is like you. He doesn't like sci-fi hardly at all. I, however, am not like you. I do like both horror and sci-fi.

I actually don't like sci-fi (like Star Wars) but I do think there are some really great sci-fi and horror combos. Actually I think my favorite 50s horror favorites are mostly sci-fi horror combos.

Sci-fi is good but I'm not a huge fan. Big franchises like Star Wars or Star Trek have never been really close to my heart even though I do enjoy them occasionally.
Sword & sorcery and "medieval fantasy" are much more my kind of thing.

Sometimes, sci-fi drifts off into horror, like with John Carpenter's The Thing. But for true science fiction in films, I'd cite movies like Forbidden Planet, Angry Red Planet, and definitely, Planet of the Apes!

Horror and sci-fi share the same mechanism: turn the rules inside out. Only pure combination is Kubrik's 2001. Amirite? What about that recent one with the stabby girl robot? Zzzz
Most popular sci-fi is just fancified battle re-enactment. Aliens is the exception to the rule. But real sci-fi is ... a chore in need of horror.

Thank you everybody for your responses, there are some interesting posts here. And I do agree that horror and sci-fi can make a great combination. As was already mentioned The Thing is a perfect example of that. Other horror/sci-fi hybrids I liked were The Hidden, Night Of The Creeps, and The Langoliers (both the novella and the very faithful miniseries).
It's the pure science fiction I'm not too keen on.

Just thought I'd bump up this thread, now that there are a lot more different users since it was created back in February 2017.
So, are there any horror fans who don't like science fiction?

I’m with ya for the most part. I’m a big fan of Carpenter’s The Thing but I’ve pretty much always avoided anything to do with space. I don’t know why, just never did much for me. I’m 32 and still haven’t seen all of the Star Wars films.

Just thought I'd bump up this thread, now that there are a lot more different users since it was created back in February 2017. So, are there any horror fans who don't like science fiction? There's no genre that I strictly dislike, I wouldn't say, but I'm not particularly drawn to science fiction. There's a lot of overlap, obviously. The 50s was packed with 'beware of science!' films. But also Star Wars really barely qualifies as science fiction. There's essentially no science involved, it's just a fantasy. But when science fiction involves actual scientific concepts that stretch ideas and reflect on things philosophically, like in Arrival recently, that can be grounds for some fascinating stuff.

I really enjoy both genres; if they mash up together, well then the more the merrier.

I like it went they go together, adds to the imagination.
But then again, I’m against putting horror icons in space.
