Haven't seen the newest one, but really enjoyed the 1999 original. I still remember the hype when it first came out and, like you OP, actually thought it was real at first! Finally watched it in early 2002 (when I was still relatively new to the genre) and found it suitably chilling. Like it a lot. The sequel is fine. It's a pretty standard horror film, but there's some nice creepiness there and it's probably the best horror movie released in the year 2000 (not saying much, that). I hate to sound like a fool and a complete ignorant moron. I saw the first in the theater as a kid. I thought it was real too. After dropping off this fat chick with acne I was dating I had to park my car and walk through a stretch of woods to get home. It was the creepiest most uneasy feeling I ever experienced in my life. And that's why I regard 'The Blair Witch Project' as one of my Top 5 Horrors of All-Time- it affected me. And still does to this day. #3 paid great homage in my eyes. #2 gets bashed - it was just 'different' - twist at the end made it feel though as if it was connected in some way Ha! Walking though a stretch of woods afterwards. I'd have freaked out in that situation. Horror movies don't usually scare me much when I'm watching them, but later that night in bed my mind starts playing tricks on me. Paranormal Activity (2007) kept me awake for awhile.

I love the P.A. movies too - they have some of the creepiest endings out there. It was an event every Halloween season going to see one. True story - I later found out this could be due to a neighbor having a 'Universal Remote Control' - and I did live in an apartment complex at the time. Anywho - it was just 'odd'. I have an old school '54 inch TV - box square monster - I don't even think they make them anymore. After seeing the one of the P.A. movies in the theater - we'd wake up at 3:00am to this giant 'glare' under our bedroom door. Creepy as hell. Walk out to the living room and the TV would either be on to 'snow' (ala Poltergeist) or just a regular TV channel was turned on. Happened multiple times. Creepy as hell!

I thought the original was boring, but after all of the horrible copycats, I somewhat respect it for being better than what came after.
Second is a laugh riot.
Third wasn't anything special, but I didn't think it was anything worth hating, either. Actually had a few tense sequences, like when the girl is stuck in the crawlspace or whatever.

I could've sworn I've written my thoughts on The Blair Witch Project somewhere, but now I can't find where... Oh, well. I've only see the first one, and--uh--I liked the concept a lot. I grew up on Long Island, and there are two old creepy roads nearby with a dozen different ghost-legends, all vaguely similar to the fictional Blair Witch tale. I'm a bit of an amateur folklorist, so I really do love this stuff, and I will say that the filmmakers did their research in making the story seem real. With that said: I really dislike this movie. After the three unlikeable protagonists trudge off goofily into the woods, I think the picture is silly and facile and just plain dull. To summarize the rest of my thoughts on this movie, I'll quote Sarris, who articulated those thoughts (which he shared) better than I ever could: EDIT: Found the link--http://IMDB2.freeforums.net/post/60428/thread.

Blair Witch Project - 10/10 Classic pioneer horror movie. I've seen it many times and will watch it many more times.
Book of Shadows - 6.5/10 It's reminiscent of Halloween 3, it's interesting, weird, a good movie to watch around Halloween, but it makes very little sense and isn't a very good sequel to it's predecessor.
Blair Witch - 4/10 Man, I just thought this one was a bad, derivative found footage movie and seems to borrows the climax of Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones.
