I wouldn't say "favorite", but The Oklahoma Girl Scout murders. In June 1977, three young girls were part of a large group of Girl Scouts at Camp Scott, in north-eastern Oklahoma. When camp started, these three girls were assigned to a (relatively isolated) tent on the edge of the camp grounds. During the first night, a thunderstorm hit so most of the activities were cancelled, and everyone went to bed earlier than usual. During the night, strange sounds were heard, but whenever any of the supervisors went looking, the sounds would stop. A girl reported that someone shone a light into her tent, and then screams were later heard by fellow campers, along with a cry for help. Just on daybreak, a supervisor found the body of one of the three girls on a path not far from their tent, still in her sleeping bag. The other two were later found in similar circumstances. All had been raped and brutally murdered. This is where it gets weird... 1. Two months before the murders, a camp counselor had been on a training exercise in preparation for the camp and found a bizarre note warning that three girls would be murdered at that camp. 2. A man was seen at the campsite on the day of the camp who had no reason to be there. 3. Locals in the area who were up late at night reported seeing strange dim orange lights in the forest around the time of the killings. 4. Footprints found at the scene were described as that of "military boots". 5. Three sniffer dogs were brought in to search for leads. One died of heatstroke, the other ran onto a highway for no reason and was killed by a car. 6. When more sniffer dogs were brought in, all leads led nowhere. Like, all dogs reached a certain point and then stopped and looked up into the sky. 7. One of the supervisors reportedly left the area immediately following the discovery of the bodies and was never heard from again. 8. After more than a year, a suspect was found. He was put on trial but found not guilty of killing the three girls, due to poor evidence. He was still sentenced to jail time (over 300 years to be exact), and then he died in jail of a heart attack. Virtually none of the evidence ever suggested that he was there in the first place, even though there were reports he was living in a cave near Camp Scott. By the time DNA tests were done, it was too late; most of the evidence was so degraded it was unusable. Camp Scott was abandoned and never reopened. So whoever really did it probably remains at large to this day. Another interesting fact is that all the other tents had four campers in them, whereas the victim's tent only had three, and all the other tents were in close proximity to each other while theirs was away from everybody else. Was that just a coincidence, or intentional? creepy....

The Betz mystery (Sphere or Orb)In 1974, the Betz family, discovered... a bizarre, allegedly self propelled, seamless metallic orb, with an elongated triangular shape stamped into its surface... on their 88-acre swathe of woodland property on marshy Fort George Island, which is nestled just east of Jacksonville, Florida. The "Alien" sphere, which had unusual properties, seemed to cause all kinds of unusual & paranormal activity and rapidly became the object of fascination, controversy, and alarm for scientists, military officials, ufologists and the general public. Read A LOT more about the Mystery Sphere here: "The Betz Mystery Sphere: Alien Artifact or Doomsday Device?" mysteriousuniverse.org/2012/04/the-betz-mystery-sphere-alien-artifact-or-doomsday-device/I understand there are a few inconsistencies in that particular article... But doing a Google Search does bring up other articles and it does seem that the Betz Sphere was real, and that it was quite mysterious... Here is another article with more interesting information about the sphere: www.ancient-code.com/decades-after-its-discovery-the-betz-sphere-remains-a-scientific-mystery/While there have been many theories put forth, as to what it was, nothing seems to have ever been confirmed as to what it was, and why it could do the things it could do...

1916 – Béla Kiss (39), Hungarian serial killer and murderer of 24 young women prior to his enrollment in the Austro-Hungarian Army in the First World War. Upon the discovery of his crimes, he was traced to a Serbian military hospital but escaped a few days before investigators arrived. Although there were several reported sightings of the killer (notably in New York in 1932), his true fate remains a mystery.[48]

MCDemuth Thanks for letting us know about the Betz mystery, of which I for one had never heard before--the similarities to Lovecraft's " The Colour Out of Space" are remarkable! Good article (skeptical) from Skeptoid. hi224 I'd heard of Bela Kiss before, but not his mysterious disappearance. Very interesting, and thanks.

Have just come across a documentary about, 'The Smiley Face Killers', which piqued my interest. Never heard of it before, and thought of this thread. Over the past decade or so, there have been a spate of college-aged men who have turned up accidentally drowned across the East coast, and Mid-west, of America. They all seem to have a commonality to the deaths - young men at college, athletic, that had gone drinking, before being separated from their drinking friends, disappearing, and then turning up dead some time later, a month or more, having 'accidentally drowned', with some being found with a piece of smiley face graffiti nearby. A theory has been espoused, that there is a group of serial killers, possibly chatting, and swapping stories on the internet, who get sexual satisfaction from kidnapping their victims, holding them captive, whilst waterboarding them, and then eventually dumping them in rivers. At first glance, this seems a little far-fetched - serial killers are usually solitary and not part of a 'gang', smiley faces are probably the most ubiquitous piece of graffiti in the world, and that if you look hard enough near any crime scene, you'd probably find a smiley face graffiti nearby. Yet this documentary, although not really professionally made, but made by a young filmmaker, is very eerie indeed, because in the course of making the documentary over two years, he went missing in upstate New York in 2013, whilst pursuing a lead. Here is a link to the documentary: The Smiley Face KillersWhat are your thoughts?

Belgian authorities believe the killer committed five murders, maybe more. The identity of the killer remains unknown, even if the Belgian police created a team to investigate the case ( la cellule Corpus ).
The bodies were discovered between march 1997 and april 1998. The bodies were found in areas with evocative names: Chemin de l'inquiétude ( road of concern ), Rue du dépôt ( street of deposit ), Rivière La Haine ( Hatred River ), Rue de la Trouille ( Street of fear ). The bodies were so badly mutilated that the authorities had a hard time identifying the victims.
The first bodies were found on march 22,1997. A policeman found 9 bags in the village of Cuesmes, near Émile Vandervelde avenue. In these bags authorities found human remains ( no head ). They think these remains belong to three different victims.
On march 24 1997 police found another bag, containing what they think is one body. Same thing, only human remains, no head.
On April 12 1997 two more bags are discovered near Havré ( Province of Hainaut ).
On April 18 1997 authorities found three other bags.
On July 18 1997 a human pelvis is found near Château-L'Abbaye.
In November of 1997 a skull is found in an orchard near Hyon ( Province of Hainaut ).
In April of 1998 teeth and cervical vertebrae are found near Hyon, believing to be from the same body they found in november of 1997.
THE VICTIMS
- Carmelina Russo ( 46 years old ), who was reported missing in january 1996 ( the pelvis found on July 18 belongs to her ).
- Martine Bohn ( 43 years old ), who disappeared in july 1996. Her torso was found in La Rivière Haine in 1997 ( authorities also believe the remains the found in the village of Cuesmes belongs to her ).
- Jacqueline Leclercq ( 33 Years old ), who disappeared in december 1996.
- Nathalie Godart ( 22 years old ), who disappeared in march 1997.
- Begonia Valencia, who disappeared in the summer of 1997. Authorities believe the skull they found near Hyon belongs to her.
The Belgian police believe the killer committed other murders, sadly in most of the case the identification of the bodies was impossible.
The Suspects
- Smail Tulja, born in 1940. Tulja commited identical murders in New York in 1990 and Albany in 2007, but sadly we have no evidences that Tulja was indeed in Belgium when the killings happened.
- Jacques Antoine. Back in 2009 his son wrote many letters to the authorities, claiming his father, a very respected doctor living in Mons, was indeed le Dépeceur. No evidences were found at the doctor's Home, but he remains a suspect.
The case remains open and the identity of the killer is still unknown. Nalkarj , Well I just searched my personal library and it seems my brother took some of my books when he left a few months ago. No biggie since I'll see him in a few weeks. Still, I find it annoying because I miss that one book in which I had the Tamam Shud, the Renczi and the Pitzer (on page 2 of this thread)cases, just to name those. Now, I don't say every info in the books I have are 100% accurate, nor can't be outdated but I don't usually buy books from dark or unknown editors. Most of my books are published (or edited, whatever) by Gründ, Könemann, Bulfinch, Taschen, Phaidon, Easton Press & Larousse. (Not boasting, just stating). I'm not saying their "batting average" is the best out there but usually they publish serious and solid stuff. I don't have the book in front of me so I can't say who is the editor. For all I know it might be published by Reader's Digest Selection, who tends to go on more popular culture/knowledge grounds at times so their stuff might not be as solid as others but I'm just assuming they might be the editors. I pretty sure it's not Larousse because I still have those about mysteries. Anyway, what I'm getting at is that I grew up and went through college at a time before most sources on Internet were academically recognized as sound and solid. By the time I was in university it was more accepted but still not to the extent it is today. Part of that still make me search for scientific or government sources as well as trying to find multiple corroborating sources. Dating back to my school days, I rarely use Wikipedia as a main nor corroborating source. I use it to get a global picture and maybe get a detail here or there but that's it. Over the years, I've seen too many discrepancies between what was written on Wikipedia, despite listing many sources, and what University, Government(s), Scientific and Industrial documents(directly from the manufacturer)said. The subjects mostly covered economy, engineering and history (but not the paranormal or unsolved things). I use it here because, again I think it gives a global picture and some details, but I don't think it should be taken as an absolute "law". Sorry for the wall of text but I'm getting at your questions now. For Renczi, there might be Romanian or Hungarian documents about it, either proving or disproving it but I speak neither one of those languages. I happen to have a coworker who is Romanian (came to Canada about 20 years ago) but she just took a sabbatical year. I'm not close enough to her to have her info to contact her either. Looking at the Wiki, it says [citation needed] a lot. It's not proving nor disproving anything but the claim it's an hoax needs a source. There is a source listed " Ross McWhirter; Norris McWhirter (1972). Guinness Book of World Records. Sterling Publishing Company. p. 288. "A claim that Vera Renczi murdered 35 persons in Rumania this century lacks authority." that tends t o say to story is not as credible as it may seem but it's not categorically disproving it either. I would have to read the part in any case. It might be half legend/ half truth. I'm Canadian, not French so I do not know about every or a lot of about what took place on the old continent. I'll look into it. You might also want to look into the the Pierre Bérégovoy "suicide", from a bullet shot at 3 meters from him.

mecano04Oh, I didn't mean to say that it wasn't real, merely that I'm surprised there's any doubt at all. Believe me, I don't entirely trust Wikipedia either; I'm just surprised at the claim. What you wrote here also applies to me, so I completely understand what you mean. I'd read about Bérégovoy in researching Mitterand's presidency, but I never knew his suicide was questionable. As always, thanks for letting me know about all of these!

mecano04's story reminded me of a few others: 1. The impossible "suicide" of Capt. George M. Colvocoresses in Bridgeport, CT, in 1872. 2. The murder of Carl Gros in Maspeth, NY, in 1891. The bullet penetrated his body but left no holes in his clothing. 3. The disappearance of a 4 ton wrecking ball from a construction site (Dowling Construction Company, Indianapolis, IN) in 1974. 4. The mutilation of a horse called Skippy in 1967; the horse had been mutilated in a muddy field, but without any footprints around him! 5. The impossible suicide/SHC of Glen B. Denney in Algiers, LA, in 1952. A spontaneous human combustion case just as fascinating as Mary Reeser, let me note!

I'll look into those but not right now since I'm just a few MB from my monthly internet consumption (pass that I'll have to pay fees).
