Why be embarresed about things you like, i mean If it makes you happy, then you shouldn't be ashamed of it.
Feel free to tell me how wrong i am.

I consider "guilty pleasures" to be things I like that most people wouldn't and that I myself consider a little silly.
It's not so much that I'm ashamed of myself for liking it as it is that I'd feel slightly embarrassed for someone else if I made them sit through it.

That is because you are taking the term too literally.
Nobody actually feels guilty or ashamed of liking any movie (I hope), the term is usually applied to movies a person knows are bad but likes anyways.

I think you're right. I mean, I know I have movies I love that I'd be embarrassed to tell people how much I enjoy them cause it either doesn't fit with how they see me (or even how they need so, for my work and such) or because it reveals something about me that I'd rather they didn't know. One of my best friends is a super "tough macho man" type as far as how most people see him, but his favorite show in the world is CHARMED and his favorite 2 movies are ROMANCING THE STONE and GONE WITH THE WIND. Seriously, he's a former body-builder, teaches martial arts, hunts on a regular basis, and lives in a sleeveless camouflage shirt- but he cries in tons of movies, loves rom-coms more than any single woman I've met, and he can sing along to any Disney cartoon you name. But he will NEVER tell anyone he likes Disney movies and such. He doesn't think people would take him seriously at work or on hunting trips, if they knew. I don't think that constitutes "guilty pleasure" because the movies he likes are considered good movies and he probably knows they are good movies.
What you are talking about is something different.
guilt·y pleas·ure
noun
noun: guilty pleasure; plural noun: guilty pleasures
something, such as a movie, television program, or piece of music, that one enjoys despite feeling that it is not generally held in high regard.

'Guilty pleasure' usually means that you like something that is generally considered bad by critics or the public in general.
I have my fair share of 'bad' movies that I have liked/enjoyed.
Waterworld is a movie I consider to be a 'guilty pleasure'.

Waterworld is a movie I consider to be a 'guilty pleasure'. But than the question would be. Why should we care what critics or the public thinks ? To me it makes no sense to call a movie you like a guilty pleasure. If you like it you like it and should ignore what other people think. I also like Waterworld but i would never call it a guilty pleasure. And frankly if you think a movie is good that most people think are bad. Than you should call it a good movie and just ignore people who tells you that the movie is bad.

. . . which is an idea that I believe is incoherent.

Its still a stupid term. I can understand thinking it's a stupid term, but it comes in handy if someone asks you how you could like a certain movie that most people think sucks.
You say "guilty pleasure" and the person knows what you mean immediately.
You are overthinking it.
I would say it describes a movie that isn't good in the traditional sense. I never use the term to describe poorly received movies that I actually consider good movies, but to describe a movie like Anaconda.

What I was saying was incoherent is the idea that one likes a film but realizes it is bad. Re "guilty pleasures," I don't have any. I could name films that I like that most other people don't, but I'd have to pay more attention than I normally do to what other people like in order to do that. I'm not someone who usually worries about consensus opinions.

In fact the term "so bad it's good" is used to describe movie that people enjoy because of how bad they are. Guily pleasure is much different though. I think the best way to descibe it is a movie that is dumb fun. I consider movies that are dumb fun to be good movies but they arent good in the same way as an intelligent well written movie is. Furious 7 for example is entertaining because of how idiotic it is imo, and that is a movie that is pretty well liked. Something that actually surprises me.

What it is for something to be good or bad is for someone to like it, to prefer it to alternatives, etc. Insofar as you're enjoying something, that's good to you, it's not bad to you. It might not be the same as other persons' opinions, but different people simply have different preferences.

Really, both probably usually amount to, "Films I like and I want to say that I like even though I have the sort of friends who'll give me shit for liking certain things."

I have enjoyed movies that are awful because of how awful they are, but I don't like them. I simply find them hilarious in their awfulness. I am not talking about critical or public opinion or what someone else will think of me, I am talking about me wtching a movie and thinking it is so awful it is entertaining. Those are movies I consider "so bad they are good." They aren't actually good.
