The main difference between them is that "Carnival of Souls" is competent filmmaking and has good acting. You must have seen a different movie that the one I watched. Total muddle without the 'fun of getting to make a film' which is evident in Plan 9. Not sure what you watched. I watched what I linked in the OP.

I watched it. Didn't like it. Read positive reviews of it. Re-watched it and still didn't like it. It just seems too "homemade" and full of "goofs" that even I notice. It makes zero sense to me.
Wrote a review of it on the old Classic Film Board "what did you watch this week" thread and was violently attacked by someone who was not even a regular poster on that thread. It is a surreal nightmare, of a character trapped in limbo and not aware she -- ----- --. It didn't really matter that it didn't make sense. Dreams and nightmares rarely do. The look and atmosphere of the film works in it's favor. Do you like David Lynch films? Yes, that pretty much sums it up. But you have sort of included a major spoiler.

Toasted CheeseLynch. Liked The Elephant Man very much but it's not "typical Lynch", is it ? . The early TV Twin Peaks were quirky enough to get my attention and watched just to see what in the world was happening. Hated Wild at Heart.
Have not seen any others because having read about them they just don't appeal.

Toasted CheeseI think that Lynch, like Tarantino, is one of those "ya like him or you don't" sort of directors. I may eventually give some of his other films a try. I did like Elephant Man after all!

What did everyone think of the remake? Is this the film you meant here spooner5020 ? Carnival of Souls (1998 film) I remember watching this one a few years ago . IMPO - It was good yet intriguing in it's own twisted storyline way but like it says here in the Wikipedia link - " a remake ... although it has very little in common with the story of the original. " . Thanks spooner5020 for your reply .

It wasn't bad. Wes Craven did it if I recall correctly. I can't see it becoming as much of a favorite as the original, however.

I don't know exactly what they were trying to do with it,but I'm not sure how much the studio got involved either. Truthfully it felt like the studio interfered a lot with the movie. I actually haven't seen the original so I had nothing to compare it to either.

Quite low budget, taking advantage of abandoned buildings at the edge of the Great Salt Lake. Quite atmospheric, and very similar to a Twilight Zone episode, "The Hitchhiker" in my opinion. I am always a sucker for low-budget flicks that actually deliver. Candace Hilligoss plays a compelling waif. WikipediaTrailer Whole flickI was just about to watch this actually.

There was a remake???
I remember it started to get attention around the early 90s.
I do not recall it ever coming up in horror movie books from the 70s or so.
It was shown on A&E.
