Shot Caller (2017)that's my #1 movie of anything released in 2016 or 2017 as nothing else scores higher than a 6-6.5/10 in those two years besides this movie (see score below) which i just finished seeing. even earlier in the movie i could tell it was going to be clearly positive as it was just a question of where it would score when i finished it as i would say not all that far into the movie (probably not even half way through the movie(it's 1hr54min and change before credits roll)) i knew it was going to be at least a 7/10 and ended up with a... 7.5-8/10 ; which makes it within my Top 108 movies. ill have to see how it holds up on a re-watch in the future but i suspect it will hold steady. nice to finally see a movie that stands out as in recent memory, 2016 and 2017 so far, there has been a lack of higher quality movies. it was a nice surprise as i just found out about it very recently (i knew nothing of it prior to that) as i stumbled into it and noticed the directors name, which i knew was tied to Felon (2008) (9/10 ; within my Top 26 movies), and figured there was a good chance this movie could stand out for me given the subject matter seemed similar enough to Felon (2008) and that movie is top notch. I just thought I would make a post here as apparently this movie is flying off the radar with only 1,245 votes with a 7.7/10 average score as I type this. but i would not be surprised if this movie stays my #1 movie of 2017 as i am not really aware of much that will challenge it this year but if some movies are actually released this year and not next year there is potential for some movies to get a 7 or higher and i expect this year to finish overall better than 2016 as 2016 only had four movies i gave a 6-6.5/10 (nothing higher) and this year only has Shot Caller a 6-6.5/10 or higher from me (which i gave a 7.5-8/10) so far but to list the movies i am aware of that i think got potential for 6-6.5/10 (or higher) status from 2017... American Made/American Assassin/Soldado/Mute/Anon and maybe a bit more than those but i would only need some of those to deliver for 2017 to beat 2016 overall for me as like i have said before 2016 is my worse overall year since 1998 as i would have to go back to 1998 to find a weaker overall year. bottom line... anyone who's a fan of Felon (2008) will definitely want to check this one out.

On channel 175 on DirecTV at 1:30, 3:30, 5:30 pm, (every two hours, basically).
Don't hold your breath for any Oscar nominations.

HumanFundRecipientI won't as i never really do as in general the vast majority of the most enjoyable movies out there are not tied to Oscars. once in a while you see quality movies nominated for a Best Picture but in general that's not the case in my experience as just looking at the current decade here is some info... -Total Best Picture nominated movies = 62 (i.e. 2010-2017) -Best Picture nominated movies of any real worth for me = only 6 of them, which is a very small amount. NOTE: i have seen about 40 out of the 62 Best Picture nominee's from 2010-2017. so in other words... based on the current decades info for me that's only 9.7% of them are of any real worth. even looking at it strictly in terms of movies i have seen that still only raises it to 15% or so. but i would say more towards 9.7% simply because i doubt any of the movies i did not see would be of any real worth for me (even if i was wrong, it would be barely). hell, just to look at all of the movies i consider favorites, which is 197 movies, there is only 30 of my favorites nominated for Best Picture which comes out to 15.2%. which means that 84.8% of my favorite movies are NOT tied to a Best Picture nominee. so while it's not rare you see some quality Best Picture nominee's it's not all that common either. just on a per decade basis here is how things break down for me in terms of volume of Best Picture nominee's i think are of any real worth.. 2010's (so far) = 6 movies 2000's = 9 movies 1990's = 8 movies 1980's = 1 movie 1970's = 3 movies 1960's = 2 movies 1940's = 1 movie moviemouthI am surprised as i kind figure given the overall style of the movie along with subject matter of each they are similar enough to where i can't see many dissing Felon and liking Shot Caller or vice versa as i would think if you at least like one you will likely at least like the other. or if you don't think much of Felon i don't see you thinking much differently of Shot Caller. basically... i would guess people who do dislike one and like the other is probably in the minority in my estimations as i would expect the majority of people would either like both or dislike both.

All I was saying that there's no major theatrical release for this movie that I know of. To the best of my knowledge, when I hear about a movie going straight to DVD or the VOD route, the Oscar chances are close to zero.

Yeah, but it does not seem like the type of movie they like anyways regardless of the major release or not.
also, they tend to pick movies (at least most of them) based mostly on politics it seems.

Not surprising as you did not like Felon and i have a feeling those who think that movie stands out will likely think the same with this one. those who don't like Felon probably won't care for this either. but as it stands... 7.4/10 average with 17,450 votes. p.s. Felon currently has 7.5/10 average with 68,588 votes.

I like Felon slightly more than Shot Caller, largely due to Kilmer's performance.

It's just for a general guideline as far as IMDb goes is all.
like how i see IMDb average scores with wide opinion there...
4.x/10 and less = crap 5.x/10 = mostly negative opinions 6.x/10 = mixed-opinions 7.x/10 = mostly positive opinions
and roughly... high 7's on up the more praised movies especially if they got plenty of votes.
so in this regard the movie has more positive than negative at the very least based on IMDb stuff.

moviemouth so basically... it's one of those movies that's watchable but ultimately forgettable for you? That is a good way to describe it. 3/10 is when movies get hard to finish for me. 4-4.9/10 are bad movies that I usually don't have that hard of a time finishing.

moviemouthsounds we are fairly similar here... like while i consider 5/10's a Thumbs Down they are 'usually' decent enough not to have wasted my time. but in all honesty even weak 5's start to get a little borderline for me from that time wasting standpoint (like you can start to notice things are becoming a little bit of a chore but overall not that big of a deal as it's still a 5/10 at the end of the day). 4/10's i consider below average which is basically wasting my time but i can still finish them and 3/10's i have been using for, lately, as movies that are just kinda bad/bland etc but i finished them as movies i can't finish then a 2/10 is my standard score. 1/10's i reserve for movies i basically greatly dislike which barely anything lands here. so i guess in a very basic sense, to keep it simple... movies i give a 4/10 i start to have a harder time to finish without typing the novel above p.s. it was not until fairly recently i finally adjusted my 2-3/10 ratings by what i said above as before 2-3/10's were pretty much the same for me as i never really had any clear way to distinguish between the two. so after i came up with that said... i went through all of the movies i gave a 2-3/10 and tried to readjust them the best i could from memory whether i finished them or not which basically made most of those switch back to a 2/10 (although some 2/10's bumped to a 3/10).
