This is roughly how the CFP would look year-to-year if it existed back then. I'm basically using the top-8 in the final regular season AP Poll. I also tweaked the match-ups to avoid same conference games in the 1st round. Here's how the 1970s would have looked.
1970 (1)Texas (11-0) vs (8)Michigan (9-1) (4)Tennessee (10-1) vs (5)Notre Dame (9-1)
(2)Ohio St (9-0) vs (7)Arizona St (10-0) (3)Nebraska (10-0-1) vs (6)LSU (9-2) ---------- 1971 (1)Nebraska (12-0) vs (8)Arizona St (10-1) (4)Michigan (11-0) vs (5)Auburn (9-1)
(2)Alabama (11-0) vs (7)Colorado (9-2) (3)Oklahoma (10-1) vs (6)Georgia (10-1) ---------- 1972 (1)USC (11-0) vs (8)Michigan (10-1) (4)Alabama (10-1) vs (5)Penn St (10-1)
(2)Oklahoma (10-1) vs (7)Texas (9-1) (3)Ohio St (9-1) vs (6)Auburn (9-1) ---------- 1973 (1)Alabama (11-0) vs (8)UCLA (9-2) (4)Michigan (10-0-1) vs (5)Penn St (11-0)
(2)Notre Dame (10-0) vs (7)Texas (8-2) (3)Ohio St (9-0-1) vs (6)USC (9-1-1) *(2)Oklahoma (10-0-1) ineligible ---------- 1974 (1)Alabama (11-0) vs (8)Notre Dame (9-2) (4)USC (9-1-1) vs (5)Auburn (9-2)
(2)Ohio St (10-1) vs (7)Nebraska (8-3) (3)Michigan (10-1) vs (6)Penn St (9-2) *(1)Oklahoma (11-0) ineligible ---------- 1975 (1)Ohio St (11-0) vs (8)Texas A&M (10-1) (4)Michigan (8-1-2) vs (5)Nebraska (10-1)
(2)Oklahoma (10-1) vs (7)Penn St (9-2) (3)Alabama (10-1) vs (6)Arizona St (11-0) ---------- 1976 (1)Pittsburgh (11-0) vs (8)Oklahoma (8-2-1) (4)Maryland (11-0) vs (5)Georgia (10-1)
(2)Michigan (10-1) vs (7)UCLA (9-1-1) (3)USC (10-1) vs (6)Houston (9-2) ---------- 1977 (1)Texas (11-0) vs (8)Ohio St (9-2) (4)Michigan (10-1) vs (5)Notre Dame (10-1)

(2)Alabama (10-1) vs (7)Clemson (10-1) (3)USC (11-1) vs (6)Nebraska (9-2) ---------- 1979 (1)Ohio St (11-0) vs (8)Houston (10-1) (4)Florida St (11-0) vs (5)Oklahoma (10-1)
(2)Alabama (11-0) vs (7)Nebraska (10-1) (3)USC (10-0-1) vs (6)Arkansas (10-1)

1983 (1)Nebraska (12-0) vs (8)Michigan (9-2) (4)Illinois (10-1) vs (5)Miami (10-1)
(2)Texas (11-0) vs (7)Georgia (9-1-1) (3)Auburn (10-1) vs (6)SMU (10-1)
I remember 1983. Nebraska had an offense that scored 60+ points a game and Texas had a defense that gave up that many yards a game. But due to the conference/bowl commitments, Texas had to play in the Cotton and Nebraska had to play in the Orange. Orange Bowl, NU v. Miami was played at night. By then, Texas and Illinois were both upset, so the game became the de facto National Championship game. No one gave Miami a chance. It would have been like Western Michigan v. Alabama. Miami wasn't Miami yet. They played a weak schedule. Surprise, surprise, surprise.

It's crazy how Miami was ranked no higher than #5 all season and they're all of a sudden crowned the champions. I guess voters just flipped a coin or something. (3)Auburn (11-1) beat (8)Michigan in the Sugar Bowl. They had a gripe to be crowned #1. They lost to (2)Texas early in the season and then ran the table, which included wins over 4 teams ranked in the top-10 toward the end of the season. It amazes me how it was allowed to go so long without a playoff. There were only 16 bowl games back then. Instead of organizing a legit playoff the dummies just kept adding more meaningless bowl games. There are 40 now! These match-ups would rival anything in sports and would be discussed for ages to come.

I assume you're joking since Missouri finished 4-7 that year. That wouldn't even get them into one of these dumpster fire bowl games they have these days. That was pretty messed up that the officials screwed up that badly. The notorious 'Fifth Down Game.'

Instead of organizing a legit playoff the dummies just kept adding more meaningless bowl games. There are 40 now! These match-ups would rival anything in sports and would be discussed for ages to come. After Texas lost, the Orange Bowl automatically became the Championship Game, in the eyes of the media. There was such revulsion over the BCS, but at least it eliminated crap like 1983. Texas-Nebraska would have been one of the great matchups ever. Both undefeated, irresistible force v. immovable object. But the Big 8 champ was locked into the orange and the SWC champ into the Cotton. And it went on for years. You got to thinking during the season "Well, if Michigan and Alabama stay #1 and #2, they won't play". Then if you had Michigan playing a 7-3 Pac-10 team and Alabama playing an ACC dog, it really messed up the title race. And it wasn't the only time. 1980, #1 Georgia could have played #2 FSU or #3 Pitt, but the Sugar Bowl went for the money and invited #7 Notre Dame. Then 1984, where BYU played in the Holiday Bowl on Christmas, won and had the National Championship wrapped up a week before Jan. 1 Wonder CFB survived let alone thrived

I've been begging for this for years.
How wild popular is March Madness?
The Sweet 16?
Here's what you do - that layoff between Thanksgiving and Christmas you have your Sweet 16 playoff every weekend - you then play the Championship Game on New Years.
You can still call them 'Bowl Games' - but they actually mean something.
Please don't tell me a #16 can't knock off a #1 in college football, a #2 against a #15 etc.
The excitement would be off the charts for an entire month.

I've put this 8-team playoff idea out there before and some think I should be fitted for a straight jacket. I've gotten responses such as: --If you're not in the top-4 you don't deserve a playoff spot. --8 is too many. It makes the regular season meaningless. --That's too many games. --With that many teams we're not guaranteed the best team will win. --I don't want a team with 3 losses winning a championship. --With 40 bowl games that's 40 teams that get to end their season with a win. I like the bowls. --It's perfect the way it is. Don't try to fix what isn't broken.
And you want 16?? Yikes. They'd love you. I appreciate your desire for more than 4, but I feel 16 is too many. However, if they expand to that one of these days I'll live with it.

Another thing I've wanted for years is a separate playoff for the P5 and G5.
P5 (1)Alabama (13-0) vs (8)Wisconsin (10-3) (4)Washington (12-1) vs (5)Penn St (11-2)
(2)Clemson (12-1) vs (7)Michigan (10-2) (3)Ohio St (11-1) vs (6)Oklahoma (10-2) ---------- G5 (1)Western Michigan (13-0) vs (8)Appalachian St (9-3) (4)So Florida (10-2) vs (5)San Diego St (10-3)
(2)Temple (10-3) vs (7)Boise St (10-2) (3)Navy (9-3) vs (6)Western Kentucky (10-3)

However, if they expand to that one of these days I'll live with it. I get bashed for it. I don't get it. I love college football. I love college basketball. March Madness is my favorite time of the year. Even if you're not a College Basketball fan - you've got to appreciate the spectacle and 'Madness'. Imagine doing that with football to an extent for a month where it's just the 'Sweet 16' and you have those playoff games between Thanksgiving and Christmas when nobody is playing? Here's my problem with college football (which is arguably my favorite sport depending on mood). Who cares after Thanksgiving unless you're in that Final 4? And how many times do we get gripes about teams being left out? The smaller undefeated schools as well. Who wouldn't love to see a smaller seeded 'Boise St' who is undefeated roll in as a #16 and have the chance to knock off 'Bama during the first week? It would be a month long party. These bowl games are meaningless. There's a month layoff. Kids are skipping now to prepare for the NFL Draft. I don't blame them. These bowls are a joke. There's a month layoff. Kids get a free vacation to Arizona, Florida, California, Hawaii for meaningless bowl games during Christmas that mean squat in the 'Dominos Pizza Bowl'. You've got a month from Thanksgiving to Christmas - the most festive time in the year in this country and football is the most popular sport in the world. The ratings would be astronomical and the betting would be off the hook (just like March Madness) - win win for everybody - networks, ratings, fans. I don't get why I'm not being brought in as a consultant on this

I've said the same thing to myself. I don't know about you but I get geared up for NFL Thanksgiving football. I don't care who Detroit or Dallas is playing or how bad the matchup or either team is. It's tradition. And Thanksgiving. Kickoff to the Christmas season. Everybody is in a great mood. Can you imagine if you also kicked this off for the start of the holiday season. #16 Georgia vs. #1 Ohio State, #15 Michigan State Vs. #2 Alabama, #14 Oklahoma vs. #3 Clemson, #12 USC vs. #5 Michigan..... That's just epic in my eyes - then the next week you have Round #2 - all leading to the National Championship Game on Jan 1. That is a month long party in my eyes.

I think the only way a more expanded playoff might work is if it's set up like UEFA CL & Europa. If a top seed loses in November as their final game... not great. Let them shuffle back into a Bowl game, or even conference title game if eligible.
I remember this winter when buzz was dead on Alabama & Clemson defeating Washington & Ohio State... & ppl want 4 more teams of that?

2007 (1)Ohio St (11-1) vs (8)Hawaii (12-0) (4)Oklahoma (11-2) vs (5)Georgia (10-2) (2)LSU (11-2) vs (7)West Virginia (10-2) (3)VA Tech (11-2) vs (6)USC (10-2) In 2007, number one ranked Missouri lost the Big XII Championship game to Oklahoma. A win would have put them in the National Championship game.In the final AP Poll, they finished fourth. In short, whatever formula you are using is badly broken.
