I had started this thread on the "Classic Films" board on the old format, and it received a number of replies, including an argument whether film series ("James Bond", for example) were actual sequels.
Anyway, IMHO, there are two sequels that surpass the originals: TARZAN AND HIS MATE (1933) THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN (1935).
Your opinions?

I would argue that the Color of Money is a better movie than the hustler. But that's just my opinion.

Some argue that Demetrius and the Gladiators surpasses The Robe. I think Wayne's World 2 is vastly superior to the first film. James Bond films are not sequels. Is The Wrath of Khan a Star Trek sequel? If so it is vastly better than the film it followed.

The Dark Knight Terminator 2: Judgment Day Aliens The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly (although yes, I understad it's not exactly a 'sequel' from a story perspective, but still) Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn Army of Darkness Most of the Friday The 13th films

I'll go with this.

If so it is vastly better than the film it followed. LaurenceBranagh also mentions TWOK above. Although I heartily agree it's vastly better than ST:TMP, I wouldn't categorize it as a sequel thereof, as there's no continuation of any story elements. It is, however, a sequel to the Season 1 episode of TOS, Space Seed. I'm reasonably sure that made it unique in its time. So to return to the original question, it was indeed better than the original, although that original stands as one of the very best of TOS episodes. And of course, The Search For Spock and The Voyage Home were direct sequels to TWOK; together, I think of them as "The Spock Trilogy."

Matt-
Having watched "After The Thin Man" recently, it is a more polished film that "The Thin Man," which seems a bit creaky. Plus I think with James Stewart, Elisa Landi and Alan Marshal, it had some good acting.
Many do consider "Godfather II" to be better than the first, and I would agree for all the wrong reasons - I hate Marlon Brando, so not having to put up with him is a good thing. But just because of my weird prejudice, I should not condemn the original.
And on a low level, I think "Hot Shots Part Deux" is better than the original.😜

SPOILER ALERT:
Matt, I first saw AFTER THE THIN MAN in a NYC revival theater. When Jimmy Stewart was shown to be the killer, there were groans and "oh no's" from the audience. I so miss those revival theaters.

I like Aliens slightly more than Alien, but I do love the original.
Buck Privates Come Home is better than the original too.

The Godfather II A Star is Born (1954) Imitation of Life (only because of Susan Kohner and Juanita Moore) An Affair to Remember (1957) vs. Love Affair (1939), for me because of the cast - though it's nearly a tie. I would agree that The Godfather II is a sequel, but aren't the others really remakes?

The Empire Strikes Back The Dark Knight X2 Spider-Man 2 Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan Captain America: The Winter Soldier Lethal Weapon 2 From Russia with Love (if it counts, since the death of Dr. No was explicitly mentioned) A Shot in the Dark Dawn of the Planet of the Apes EDIT: How to Train Your Dragon 2
I actually prefer the first Alien, Toy Story, Terminator, and Rescuers over their (first) sequel despite the general consensus that most people hold that the sequel were superior to the original. I haven't decided yet whether The Godfather Part II or The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is better than the original. I need to watch Mad Max 2 since I hear it's pretty good.
