sostie --- Can you use the PM system? I can tell you there. Not sure what you mean by "OT". It's a "Guess the Link" thread. Doesn't say it has to be movie linked. Not sure if PM is working on this comp netwrok..but don't worry, thanks for the offer. It doesn't say film related in the title true, though my opening post when I started the thread did say that was the intention. It's no biggie, it's getting more action now that it did a few weeks ago. It was something to dip in and out of when I had a few spare minutes at work but difficult (for me personally) to keep track with all the spoiler tags..it's OK there are other threads I can dip into

sostie OK, I'll keep the original intention in mind. The recent penultimate puzzle is movie linked in that the titles lead to the answer, rather than the content of the movies. It was an event I had in mind, however the answer is also a movie. soullimbo answered correctly.

Movie-related quickie...
Nigel Bruce
Art
Midsomer Murders
Humpty Dumpty
Robin Hood
Physics
St. Augustine (yeah... Hey, if I can use the guy for one puzzle, he'll suffice for another too!)
Ornithology
If you put the clues together aright, you should get the title of a movie.
EDIT: It's not an acrostic of any sort, just to pre-empt that. (I just noticed how "putting the clues together" may lead you to think that, especially when I've used acrostics before.)

SalzmankCan I ask if the movie is one which would be known by all, and not some obscure movie?

alfromniThat's a difficult question to answer. It's not as well-known as, say, Casablanca, but people who enjoy '30s cinema in particular may well know it. (I should note that it does not have Nigel Bruce in it.)

SalzmankThanks. That may narrow it down somewhat.

One note: alfromni let me know in a PM that he got the answer. It's * drumroll, please* ... The Bishop Murder Case (1930), starring Basil Rathbone. I'll allow anyone interested to try to fit the clues in...

Salzmank 1. Forget flowers and move to the connection between countries.
2. Not the Dreyfus Affair, the trial of Oscar Wilde, nor the abdication of Edward VIII. Film plots are irrelevant in most cases. Work on the titles.
I was working on the angle of their being the national flowers of the current members (both permanent and non-permanent) of the UN Security Council, but that doesn't quite work. Are international organizations a good angle, by any chance?

Salzmank - Flowers Yes, but not organisations in the plural.

alfromni Hm. That stumps me, then. It's not the UN Security Council or the General Assembly. Certainly not the Commonwealth, the OIF, the EU, or the ICC. Not Interpol, the WTO, or the IMF. What's left? ... I'm sure it'll be something obvious I'm not seeing.

alfromniUmm... Sports? Not FIFA--the Olympics? IOC? But what in the IOC? I can find most of them, but not a few...

Salzmank - (Corrected spoiler) FIFA no, Olympics yes, now fit the flower countries given to answer the puzzle. What do they have in common?

Salzmank or anyone - Flower puzzle. Figured it out yet? It's not difficult.

alfromniNot yet, but it's not the difficulty level (one way or another), just that I was away this weekend. As for the question... Countries that have had a multiple Olympic gold medalist? I found it difficult to fit Belarus in any other way.

Salzmank No, nothing to do about athletes, performances, schedules, or events, within the Games.

Salzmank I can't really give you any more clues without revealing the answer. It'll have to be a 'Eureka!' moment.

alfromniQuestion: is knapweed in fact referring to Belarus? Because I'm finding it very difficult to find that country in anything having to do with the Olympics (besides what I've already mentioned), especially as it was part of the USSR.

SalzmankNo, Belarus is not involved. Try another country. To give you a clue the relevant country's national flower is sometimes referred to as a cornflower, but which itself is of the knapweed family. I wondered before how Belarus came into your equation, but as you were talking about medals....no, not Belarus.

alfromniThink-- think!--I've got it with your last hint: Countries that have hosted the games.
If so, I was really confused because I'd thought that a few of the flowers referred to different countries.
