Aye, aye, captain: The Colditz Story--The Nazis used Colditz Castle as a major POW camp during WWII; it was considered inescapable (like Alcatraz), but Pat Reid and several others were able to escape from it.
Some Like It Hot--Joe and Jerry are on the run from "Spats" Colombo, based on Al Capone, who was sentenced to Alcatraz, of course.
The Citadel--the Alcatraz Citadel, of course.
Catch Me If You Can--Not sure. General theme of crime, escape, etc.?
The Pelican Brief--the clue that gave it to me. Alcatraz literally means pelican in Old Spanish, and the bird used to roost on the island.
The Dark Tower--I think this clue refers to the Alcatraz water tower, unless there's something else I'm missing.
Psycho--asylum?

Salzmank You're more or less there. Here's the full explanation, most of which you've got. 1. The Colditz Story (1955) - used as a POW camp, as was Alcatraz. 2. Some like it Hot (1959) - parody on the St Valentine Day massacre organised by Al Capone, an infamous inmate. 3. The Citadel (1938) - "The citadel" is part of the Alcatraz fortress. 4. Catch Me If You Can (2002) - One of Frank Abagnale's assumed identities was as a U.S. Bureau of Prisons agent. The Bureau was responsible for the Alcatraz penitentiary. 5. The Pelican Brief (1993) - Pelican Island was the original name of the Rock 6. The Dark Tower (2017) &... 7. Psycho (1960) - References to Zealous Bates Tower who was responsible for the construction. (I didn't know about the water tower.) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zealous_Bates_Tower

Salzmank Re Swordfish Club Couldn't figure this one out. Then I had a Eureka moment! Square the guard's number and reverse the answer.
============
Guard: Hello, sir. How are you this evening?
Member: Fine, thanks.
Guard: Four?
4 x 4 = 16 > 61
Member: Interesting. Sixty-one.
------------
Guard: That's silly. Five?
5 x 5 = 25 > 52
Member: Fifty-two.
-------------
Guard: I'll let the president know. Six?
6 x 6 = 36 > 63
Member: Sixty-three.
-------------
Guard: Huh. Seven?
7 x 7 = 49 > 94
Member: Ninety-four.
--------------
Guard: What do you think of eight?
8 x 8 = 64 > 46
Member: Forty-six, my good man.
Guard: Excellent. Welcome in.
And the guard lets him in.
Well, John goes right up to the guard.
Guard: Hello, sir. How are you this evening?
John: Uh, well...
Guard: Excellent, sir. Nine?
9 x 9 = 81 > 18
John's reply? Eighteen =============
To quote the words of Mr Memory..."Am I correct sir!?"

Golden Wattle Red Poppy Cattleya Orchid Acer Plum Blossom Lily-of-the-Valley Knapweed Bear's Breech Tulip Stylized Lily Chrysanthemum Dahlia Camomile Red carnation Rose of Sharon Linnea Rose Tudor Rose ================ In all sincerity, I'm a bit stumped on this one. When I first looked at it several days ago, I thought a connection could all be women's names, some obvious--Rose, Linnea, Sharon, Dahlia, Lily, Poppy--and some not: Chrisann from "chrysanthemum," Daisy from "camomile" (a member of the daisy family). But then the others tripped me up, and I've not been able to find any connections for them.
So I moved on to political symbols. For most of them, yes: the Golden Wattle is the official plant of Australia, the acer (as a maple leaf) of Canada, the red poppy of Memorial/Remembrance Day, the Tudor rose of the Tudors in the War of the Roses, the rose of Sharon of South Korea, the red carnation of labor movements.
But there are several for which I am unable to find a political connection --so, once again, I'm stumped. Hmmm...

Salzmank - Re Flowers You're closer than you think. But the connection isn't political although in one connection many people try to make it so.

Salzmank - Re Flowers You're closer than you think. But the connection isn't political although in one connection many people try to make it so. Could it be national flags--no, strike that. National flowers.
Chrysanthemum--Japan
Tudor Rose--England
"Stylized lily"--fleur-de-lys--France
Rose of Sharon--South Korea
Golden Wattle--Australia
Camomile--Russia
Acer--Maple--Canada
Plum blossom--China and Taiwan
Tulip--the Netherlands and Hungary
Rose--United States
Linnea--Sweden
Knapweed--Belarus
Cattleya--Colombia
Dahlia--Mexico
Haven't yet found the connection for a few of them,
but--to quote Mr. Memory and yourself--am I correct, sir?

SalzmankNational flowers is correct. That's the first connection. But as you see it's not a full list of the countries of the world, so what's the particular connection between these flowers/countries?

As for your other puzzle, I've gone through the Dreyfus Affair, the trial of Oscar Wilde, the abdication of Edward VIII... Question: do we have to know the films' plots? That is to say, Carry On, Dick is a parody of Dick Turpin incidents/half-legends. Is (e.g.) that fact relevant?

Salzmank 1. Forget flowers and move to the connection between countries.
2. Not the Dreyfus Affair, the trial of Oscar Wilde, nor the abdication of Edward VIII. Film plots are irrelevant in most cases. Work on the titles.

Are these film related? I can't tell because I can't open the "spoiler" button on my work computer so I have no idea what is solved or isn't or how, and don't really want to spend too much time trying to solve something that's been done or is off topic

sostie --- Not film related. The answer to the second puzzle is just one word. If you can't get the spoiler button to work simply write the word "spoiler" within brackets...thus: (spoiler) text (/spoiler)...but use brackets ( "[]" ) not parentheses. Don't forget the "/" when closing.

It's not creating a spoiler I have a problem with...it seems all the guesses are under spoiler tags..I can't open them to view them, so I have no idea what attempts at answers ahave been made. But don't worry..if it's OT I probably won't bother. Thanks anyway.

sostie --- Can you use the PM system? I can tell you there. Not sure what you mean by "OT". It's a "Guess the Link" thread. Doesn't say the topic has to be movie linked.
