It really annoyed me at first because of how much it strayed from the book. Over time, I have come to appreciate it as a movie and separate the faithfulness to the book from that. While I used to consider it the worst of the trilogy, I now rate it higher than ROTK. However, FOTR is still my favorite.

You may not believe this but i hadn't seen any of them until this week. I've just finished the Hobbit trilogy and plan to watch the Lord of the Rings trilogy next week. So at the moment The Battle of the Five Armies is the best so far but reading the posts in this thread that will probably change

The Two Towers. It had the best acting, the battles were the best I'd ever seen on film, and I liked the changes.

While I used to consider it the worst of the trilogy, I now rate it higher than ROTK. However, FOTR is still my favorite. The poll tells us to pick just one LOTR movie. I did that. But arguments in favor of each of the three films are valid to me. They all have their strong points and are all excellent. I gave each of them a 10/10 rating.
Imo at least, BB ;-)

I'm absolutely loving the fact no one's voted for any of the Hobbit films as of the time I'm posting this.

Return got the Oscar as an overall achievement for the entire series and not because it specifically was necessarily the best film of the three THIS^

Fellowship of the Ring, but Return of the King is a hair close. Fellowship gets the edge just because ROTK is too long lol.

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.
It's not only my favourite movie of the LOTR trilogy, as well as being my favourite out of all the Peter Jackson Middle-Earth movies, but it's also my all-time favourite movie. I haven't had the same experience seeing a movie at the theatre since. It has everything I want in a movie. I realise others will disagree, but this is just my own personal opinion of the film.

The Return of the King. There's yet to be another fantasy movie on that same scale.

But honestly I think you could make a good case for any of the three being the best.
