Kitty Wynn seemed destined for big things after her performance in Panic in Needle Park. I'd say she outperformed co-star Al Pacino.

Well... where did Edward Nortons career go? Oh that's different. If you retire to steady work in art house films you're doing ok. Like Shia Lebouf. Credible directors still seem to want to work with him despite all his idiocy off screen. I think this thread is about those hyped young stars who ended relegated to bad tv if anything.

Claire Forlani was thought to be part of Hollywood's next A-list in the late 90's after Meet Joe Black, her appearance in Mystery Men the following year was small but was made more prominent by the media -- However, the movie underperformed big time at the box office. The following year she was one of the leads in Boys and Girls with then it guy Freddie Prinze Jr. which also struggled at the box office and did very poor with critics. 2001's Anti-Trust also didn't do too hot either where she was also one of the leads. In 2003, she was Jackie Chan's co-star in The Medallion, which not only met terrible word of the mouth but also only opened at no. 5 at the box office on opening weekend in the U.S. Since then, her career's been pretty, well, 'diverse' is probably the best word to use here, from guest appearances on CSI: NY, NCIS: LA, Hawaii Five-O to one of the leads in Starz's Camelot series, being the love interest in an Uwe Boll film( In the Name of the King), and even beer commercials using a different accent. I recall hearing that a TV series was in the works with her as one of the leads opposite of Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje with Natalie Portman in a producing role but nothing ever came of an announcement. Ah, Claire Forlani. My goodness she was/is beautiful. I remember seeing her in Bobby Jones: Stroke of Genius (starring Jim Caviezel interestingly enough). Outside of Jennifer Connelly they were my two loves in modern Hollywood back in the late '90s/early 2000's. I wish she had had a bigger career, but I enjoy the works that she has been in. I much would have preferred her to Kate Winslett in Titanic. Speaking of others though, I'm not sure if she was broadcast to be the next big thing, but Allison Doody was another extremely beautiful woman. Who can forget her appearance in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. The next thing I knew she retired from Hollywood to raise her family (commendable but lamentable for those of us who wanted to see her in more things). I believe the next thing I saw her in was the King Solomon's Mines made for TV film with Patrick Swayze. Pretty decent for a made for TV film. Going into the deeper past, a potential leading man that I believe was supposed to be the next big thing was Tom Tryon. I know he made some pretty successful films like the Glory Guys and some others but I believe his treatment by Otto Preminger in the Cardinal dissuaded him from taking many more acting roles.

I don't know why, but for a while people were calling for Armie Hammer to be the next Batman. I'm not even sure what that was based on, because he hasn't had much for career at all, let alone a successful one. George Miller's Justice League movie that was scrapped a few days before filming began had Hammer as Batman. So people wanted him to play Batman in 2016, not because of his resume, but because he was supposed to play in in 2009? That's not exactly a ringing endorsement of his talent. Does anyone know if the timeline for all this is correct? I'm only asking because 2009 is a year after The Dark Knight and I have a hard time believing DC/Warner Bros. was considering making a completely separate Batman, because it wasn't, knowledge Christopher Nolan was doing a trilogy?

I'm not sure how they would've explained it to the fans, but they were going to do it. Armie Hammer was a choice by the fans in 2016 because they wanted to see what he could've been. The studio was never really into him, though, as they wanted someone in their middle ages.

Steven Bauer got a big build up as a new Travolta type in Thief of Hearts 1984
Tom Selleck during the Magnum P.I. era got the build up phrase as "The Hot as Lava Lover" with High Road to China 1983
Those two has offcourse continued to work with different successes and results, but the big build up movies that was going to make them mega stars of the movies never came.

There's no way they were actively working on the Justice League movie, with an entirely separate Batman, while Christopher Nolan was in the midst of his trilogy.

Well it's not necessarily logical, but it was going to happen. Another article I read (but I can't find again for some reason) said that they were going to just say that Hammer was Bale's Batman. They were going to just kind of gloss over it. What's even more surprising is that the movie wasn't even canceled because it didn't make sense, it was canceled (mainly) because of scheduling conflicts.

But that title ended up going to a little movie called "Star Wars" and "Damnation Alley" completely bombed.

Don't you just hate it when the put this in the opening credits of a movie; "And Introducing...". 9 times out of 10 when they do that, the person never has another significant role in their lives.

"And Introducing...an actor or actress that you'll probably never see again in any major or significant role".

Loren Dean: With only a few credits, got the lead role as the title character in Billy Bathgate- opposite Nicole Kidman, Dustin Hoffman, and Bruce Willis. Got one other lead role in the movie Mumford, but supporting roles and guest starring parts soon followed (Enemy of the State and Bones, among others). But hasn't been onscreen since 2011.

Gabrielle Anwar - while I loved her as Fiona on Burn Notice, back in the 90's, after her Scent of a Woman tango with Al Pacino, was supposed to become a huge star and it just never happened.

Stuart Townsend, Queen of the Damned damned his career
Carrie-Anne Moss, The Matrix made her famous, but what has she done for us lately?
Natasha Gregson Wagner, Natalie Wood's daughter, did a bunch of movies, then vanished
Damon Wayans, the senior, seemed destined for big screen success, but on his own his movies flopped. I was actually shocked when he did that sitcom, he gave up, another sitcom was not funny.

I was actually shocked when he did that sitcom, he gave up, another sitcom was not funny. Townsend turned down LOTR for Queen of the Damned because he would've been the lead, it would turn out years later his ego did not deflate as he turned down the part of Fandral in the first Thor movie from 2011, simply because it was a supporting role. Had his ego not gotten in the way he'd be A list for sure now, or would have been anyway. Moss seems to be stuck in TV land doubling as a regular on AMC's Humans and as Hogarth in the Marvel/Netflix shows. They're performed well, but they're not as scene stealing as her earlier work in The Matrix and Memento. It's a real shame her career didn't continue to blossom like it should have. I'd like it if Nolan were to cast her in a major part in his next film, for my money she delivered the best female performances in any of his films to date.

While I think he did kind of outshine Johnny Depp on 21 Jump Street, he was never going to make it because he essentially played himself in everything...and developed a big drug problem. But, hey, he got to be with "in her prime" Yasmine Bleeth.
