Harvard faces discrimination probe while accepting mostly nonwhite class
By Nancy Coleman, CNN Updated 0121 GMT (0921 HKT) August 4, 2017 edition.cnn.com/2017/08/03/us/harvard-minority-admissions-trnd/index.htmlThe college is facing a discrimination complaint under a Justice Department investigation (CNN)Harvard College's admitted freshmen last year became the first class in the school's multi-century history comprised of mostly nonwhite students. And again, for the second year in a row, the majority of students invited to attend the prestigious college this year identify as ethnic minorities. Of the 2,056 students accepted for the class of 2021, 50.8% do not identify as white. Of the admitted students, 22.2% are Asian-American, 14.6% are African-American, 11.6 are Latino, 1.9% are Native Americans, and Native Hawaiians are 0.5%. First-generation students make up 15.1% of the admitted class. Neither this year's class nor last year's made many headlines when the college initially released the data. But with the Department of Justice now investigating a discrimination complaint against the school, Harvard and its diverse array of students have been thrust into the national spotlight. The complaint in question was filed by a coalition of 64 Asian-American associations in May 2015, DOJ spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores said in a statement. The case rolled over from President Barack Obama's administration. "The complaint alleges racial discrimination against Asian-Americans in a university's admissions policy and practices," Flores said in the statement Wednesday. "This Department of Justice has not received or issued any directive, memorandum, initiative or policy related to university admissions in general." Harvard vehemently denied the allegations brought against the school by the coalition, Students for Fair Admissions. "As the 2015-16 academic year begins, Harvard confronts a lawsuit that touches on its most fundamental values, a suit that challenges our admissions processes and our commitment to a widely diverse student body," Harvard President Drew Faust said in a speech at the start of school two years ago. "Our vigorous defense of our procedures and of the kind of educational experience they are intended to create will cause us to speak frequently and forcefully about the importance of diversity in the months to come." Harvard spokeswoman Melodie Jackson said in a statement that the college's admissions process "considers each applicant as a whole person" and is "consistent with the legal standards established by the US Supreme Court." The DOJ issued its statement in response to a story by The New York Times on a document within the department's civil rights division on "investigations and possible litigation related to intentional race-based discrimination in college and university admissions." CNN has not independently obtained the document. While the Times reported the document referred to "affirmative action admissions policies deemed to discriminate against white applicants," Flores said the characterization was "inaccurate." A New York Times spokesperson said in a statement to CNN that they stand by their reporting. "To become leaders in our diverse society, students must have the ability to work with people from different backgrounds, life experiences and perspectives," Harvard spokeswoman Jackson said in the statement. "Harvard remains committed to enrolling diverse classes of students." CNN's Jessica Schneider and Sarah Jorgensen contributed to this report.

I think that it's high time that higher education in the USA adopted admissions policies that do not take into account the applicant's race. White, and especially Oriental candidates are badly disadvantaged, because not being black, south Asian or Latino = "boring person who has nothing to offer" in admissions terms.

Anyone else don't give a shit?
All these people who seek to divide human beings into little groups, then make all the groups equal, are prejudiced idiots.
I'm part of the human race, that is enough for me. If you need to differentiate yourself more than that, fuck off.

If someone needs an advantage getting ahead wouldn't it be due more to socio economic status than race? Nothing held the black kids at my suburban high school back from achieving. They were as well to do as a group as anybody attending the same school.

This is silly on both issues.
Asian Americans are overrepresented mathematically already and taken it from the white population who are still the largest group by a wide margin.
Getting into Harvard has always been more than filling out an application.

Article claims most admitted students this year are non-white, includes Hispanics/Latinos as non-white when most Hispanics/Latinos in the U.S. are white. I'm impressed with the level of bigotry necessary to pull that one off.

Getting into Harvard has always been more than filling out an application. Orientals tend to be by a clear margin the best performing ethnic group in the USA, but the individual oriental is punished for the success of the ethnic group as a whole by having a much higher bar to clear in order to gain admission to a decent university, compared to blacks and latinos (and a slightly higher bar than whites). If university admissions were based on merit only, then some universities in the US may actually turn out to be majority Orientals (especially the best Californian universities such as Berkeley and Stanford).

Supreme Court Justice Elena Kaganovich will have to recuse herself, since she worked as an admissions officer at Harvard.

Cal Tech is 42% Asian. The best school in the world by many standards. Affirmative Action also applies to women. That how certain lobby groups are able to make claims like "white people are the biggest beneficiaries of Affirmative Action". White women are given a substantial bonus, especially at technical schools. College is majority women across the board. NOBODY cares about how great your child is on account of him being black or brown or whatever. Nobody wants to expose themselves to a higher crime rate or higher strain on social services. The deal with Affirmative Action is an underhanded one. Schools want it for the same reason they want legacy admissions. It pits poor white students against rich black students. There are also all sorts of government benefits to claim. Women are more likely to pay back student loans, and faster. Leftists will cry, because they are finally about to lose the class war.

They are academically the best performing ethnic group. And it is very well documented: www.latimes.com/science/sciencenow/la-sci-sn-why-do-asian-american-students-perform-better-than-whites-20140505-story.htmlwww.theatlantic.com/education/archive/2017/08/asians-affirmative-action/535812/

Researchers divided Asian Americans into four different groups: East Asians, Filipinos, Southeast Asians and South Asians. All groups outperformed whites, they wrote, and there was no difference between male and female students.

Not really. You would have to explain what they are better at by a clear margin before making the assessment of discrimination against them.

I know that Indians (particularly non-Muslim Indians, I suspect) also do very well scholastically. Although I think that east Asians have a higher average IQ, so I'm perhaps conflating 2 different things. It would surprise me if Muslims from Pakistan, Bangladesh etc outperform whites...those ethnicities tend to do very poorly in the UK, although I suppose that there are different types of immigrants we're getting from there. It is extremely hard to emigrate to the US, so any emigrant group is apt to be represented by the best and brightest. It doesn't say which of the Asian ethnicities comes out top, but if I had to guess, it would be east Asians followed by Indians.

Particularly math and science? What about all the other areas that can be taught in college? Surely you aren't suggesting Harvard only does math and science. Maybe you're saying that Asians are excellent in everything and thus no other groups have a chance?

You tend to go with stereotypes and generally don't know much about the subject you are talking about. Indians and Chinese are outperforming whites in USA for a very specific reason. The cream of Indians and Chinese reached USA. The most elite of them and so they are doing good. It's only due to migration policy of USA. This advantage may fade out in 3 or 4 generations. And you are certainly wrong that "Orientals tend to be by a clear margin the best performing ethnic group in the USA". Indians are significantly outperforming Chinese and all other orientals in USA in terms of both academic as well as financial success.

When Americans refer to "Asian-Americans", they are usually mainly referring to east Asians. And where's your evidence of the above anyway? Also, I was right about the fact that East Asians tend to have the highest average IQ: iq-research.info/en/page/average-iq-by-country
