movieweb.com/richard-dreyfuss-tantrum-bill-murray-lifetime-achievement-awards/
"I am bothered that Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Tom Hanks and Jack Nicholson have been given Lifetime Achievement Awards by the American Film Institute and I haven't."
"Bill Murray is a pig. What really irritates me about him is that he's a good golfer and I'm not and also, he's funny enough that, even now, although I loathe him, he makes me laugh."
"I grew up not liking myself very much. I became a schmuck. I was doing drugs. I was drinking a bottle of cognac a day. I was sleeping with other men's wives. I got to the point where I wanted someone to stop the world so I could get off."
Why Dreyfuss hasn't done many movies in recent years:
"Although Richard Dreyfuss has starred in American Graffiti, Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Mr. Holland's Opus, and many more Hollywood classic movies, the actor claims that he is now broke.
Richard Dreyfuss' arrogance and reluctance to play "second fiddle" may be adding to why the actor hasn't been working as much lately. Dreyfuss admits that he wants the starring role only because the leading star has all of the power while the co-star has to pretty much "beg" for any sort of power on set and within the movie."

So he's a broke has-been who thinks he's still big enough to be a leading man and that crapping on people is a surefire way to land big roles? I haven't even thought about Dreyfuss until I saw this article and I bet he quickly fades into the obscurity from which he surfaced.

He's pulling a Billy Joel; getting weird and depressed. Bummer...because I miss seeing him on screen.
While he's got a solid resume, he doesn't need to sling mud at his colleagues (especially the ones he picked out). It looks petty and sad.
His comments on Murray and golf are particularly unfortunate. I golf about once a week with coworkers. You get to know the guys who are too miserable to just enjoy playing a game outside. Not knocking on them or Mr. Dreyfuss at all...it's just that those are the guys you start to worry about.

Here's an older article that goes more in-depth on him claiming to be broke. www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-3443983/I-won-Oscar-m-broke-did-Richard-Dreyfuss-star-Jaws-Close-Encounters-squander-fortune-end-scrabbling-work.html'It's a hard thing to admit,' he says. 'I have a greater body of work than any actor I know. I have created, I don't know, maybe 50 or 60 films that I am intensely proud of. I was very proud of the fact that I could boast that I never worked for money. Now I can't say that. I have to say I've worked for money a great deal recently, because I've had to.' Case in point, he has admitted to doing movies like "Red" and "Piranha 3-D" for the money. www.vulture.com/2010/10/richard_dreyfuss_on_red_i_did.html'I used to feel pretty much in sync with looking like I felt and feeling like I looked. Then something got out of sync,' he admits. 'And now I feel like I'm 38, and I look in the mirror and I'm obviously almost 70.' This is a problem in Hollywood, and it will get worse, he says. 'First of all, they don't write for 90-year-olds. They don't even write for 50-year-olds. And they don't pay 60-year-olds as well as they do 40-year-olds.' Isn't it only women who see their careers fall off a cliff after the age of 40? 'Women have it really unfairly,' he accepts. 'You could name on one hand the women whose careers have gone past the age of 35. Leaving aside the English acting community - that's another story; there's always been a craftsman-like respect for actors and actresses in the UK - very few ever go past that age limit. You really only have a shot while you're beautiful.' He says it's better for men, but not much. 'In America there's a small group of men - De Niro, Pacino, Dustin Hoffman - who have rewired themselves and made themselves a second career, but it's very rare.' 'It's reached a point in film-making where there aren't any good scripts. The most intelligent movies they're making are about mechanical monsters. There are no parts being written now, even for young actors. When you look at something like Rosencrantz And Guildenstern Are Dead you see the contrast. That was such a treasure for an actor because it had some of the greatest characters and dialogue ever.' Hollywood, he argues, doesn't like people who walk away then try to come back. 'It does seem like in California there's a state law that says you're not allowed to quit showbusiness. Anyone who says they're quitting is immediately looked upon as a lunatic. That's what happened to me.' Surely an actor who loves his job and is good at it wouldn't want to quit in the first place though. 'Even in heaven you can get bored,' he says. 'The work... it wasn't something I had to keep doing in order to satisfy me. It was something I had to do in order to satisfy agents and directors and studio heads.' But it was money, and the need to make it, that brought him back. 'Actually, the truth is hard to say or hear, but I had an amazing amount of bad luck financially and I realised I didn't have the money I had.' This is an understatement. I'm taken aback when he uses the word 'broke'. He doesn't mean on-the-streets broke, ordinary-person broke, does he? He means Hollywood, I-only-have-two-swimming-pools-now broke. 'No, if I use the phrase "I'm broke" it means I'm broke. It means I don't have the money I had. I wanted to retire and take my wife [Svetlana] on cruises. I can't afford that. I want to be able to go to Europe when I want. I can't.' 'I was never good with money. I spent too much and didn't think about the consequences. I was being a young spoiled movie star. When I finally met the business manager I have now, he said, "Didn't anyone ever tell you to take a portion of each salary and put it aside in a special account you can't touch?" and I said, "No." Too bad for me. I didn't think about it.'

He hates Bill Murray because he's smart enough to make investments and still get paid.
Murray got a role in his 50s "Lost in Translation" Murray got a role in his 60s "Life Aquatic" and "Hydes Park on Hudson" that were written for him.
Also, Murray built a brand "The Chive" and "William Murray Golf" Murray never has to work again because he took stock in Ghostbusters brand.
he doesnt sit sit around a sulk. Murray has depression issues, but he keeps that private, he is the definition of being old and still cool.
Dreyfus is probably a better dramatic actor, but Murray has more range. When Dreyfus says they don't write roles for old men in Hollywood, he's bitter because they don't write them for him.
DeNiro, Pacino, Jack, and Murray all get roles.

I guess his 1970's salaries couldn't keep up with inflation + spending as he's said... a double edged sword there.
I can't help think his opinion of Murray must be in jest, unless he'd been consistently passed over by him. Wes Anderson 'hired' Bill for Rushmore basically for nothing & I think Bill has said he essentially did it for free.
If he wanted more creative control, maybe Dreyfuss should just start co-producing stuff on his own.
Besides, the Dreyfuss 'brand' if you will was while he was younger. Mr. Holland's Opus doesn't quite slide into his legacy for me. He'll always be American Graffiti-Close Encounters-Jaws stardom. He was the narrator in my #1 film of all time, & yet it's never felt like a starring role so much as an artistic favour for Reiner.

those quotes read like self aware sarcasm. I wondered about that myself. However, if he was serious then when he said, "I was a schmuck," he should not have used the past tense. But as Groucho said, "We're way past tents now. We're living in bungalows."

OK, so he's a jerk, but he's not really inaccurate regarding his place among other actors.
I also think there's some humor thrown into those quotes nut without reading the whole thing, not sure.

Murray is a humanitarian. In the sense that he loves people and making people laugh. He's a good guy.

I thought he was older.
He's looked 70 for like 30 years now. I always just assumed he wasn't doing more films because he was basically retired.

Thanks for reminding me why I've always disliked Richard Dreyfuss. I was watching Jaws recently and desperately wanted him to be eaten by the shark.
