At the risk of sounding like an idiot, I'd recommend checking out his bit in "Last Action Hero." In this movie (where movies can come to life), McKellen plays the grim reaper from the 1957 film, "The Seventh Seal."
McKellen's grim reaper is not without purpose, but emerges from the film into modern (mid 90s) America. While his role is pretty small, he has an incredible presence...especially after you've just seen two hours of Arnold parodying himself as over the top as possible.
So I'm going to say, yes, he's great.
I don't like LOTR, but he was far and away the best part of those movies for me.

I think so. He is believable in a variety of roles, including Gandalf in LOTR; Magneto in the Xmen movies; and Kennedy in Swept from the Sea.

Only when he is playing a "campy" character. Which means every character he plays?

I haven't really seen enough from him. Just the first "Lord of the Rings" You would do well to get dressed and go outdoors and get some movies from your local library.
