In the greatest generation of the console wars it was all about the Sega Genesis and the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Which did you support, and why?

I didn’t have either of my own, but at my best friend’s house I enjoyed the genesis more...esp x-men and sonic. Now, though, snes is way more appealing. 🤷♂️

Depends on what you are looking for. SNES has singular best games, but I tend to enjoy Genesis's library more.

The NES all the way. Double Dragon II, Double Dribble, Rad Racer, Contra, Super Contra, Batman, Goonies, Solomon's Key, Excite Bike, Magmax, Galaga, Galaxian, Road Fighter, Mario, the Legend of Kage, Cabal, Choplifter, Arkanoid, Sky Destroyer and Tetris were some of the games I played. Countless hours of frustration and fun.

The Genesis or what's known as the Mega Drive over here.
It wasn't that I supported either, my dad decided to buy me a video game console for Christmas and he asked around at work to see which was better and he decided on the Mega Drive.
So that was what I had. I'm glad he chose that, I had some good games for it. Streets of Rage, Sonic, Shinobi, Golden Axe, Gunstar Heroes etc.

Super Nintendo. I didn't mind Sega Mega Drive (I preferred Sega Master System more which was the first console I had) but Super Nintendo had games like Super Mario World, Super Mario All Stars, Super Mario Kart, Donkey Kong Country 1-3, Super Metroid, Kirby's Dream Land 3, The Lion King, Aladdin, The Addams Family: Pugsley's Scavenger Hunt, The Mask, Bubsy 2, Wheel of Fortune and Yoshi's Island and I played them more often than Sega Mega Drive.

The Genesis had some great exclusive games (Sonic, Toejam and Earl, Phantasy Star, Golden Axe, Road Rash, Streets of Rage...) and some games that were better than their SNES counterpart (Aladdin, Earthworm Jim, Mortal Kombat, NBA Jam...) but the SNES simply has more all-time classics and highly influential games, even to this day (Super Metroid, Zelda: Link to the Past, Super Mario World, Final Fantasy 4-6, Earthbound, Chrono Trigger, Clock Tower [seriously]...) so it gets the edge from me.
But they both had decent libraries. It's very close. PS2 is the only console that blew the contenders out of the park, imo.
People in the UK especially and Europe generally like Sega better because I guess they had better distribution there and most US fans of the 16-bit era will probably say SNES for the same reason. Maybe it also depends on the console you had as a kid.

I owned a Genesis but I was secretly envious of my friend's SNES Same here. There were a lot of great games on the Genesis that I wanted on the SNES. But that I think that solidified a friendship or two. You'd hang out and play the games you were missing out on. It was great fun. I remember when Mario 3 came out and I was the first kid on the block to get it. We practically needed a bouncer outside the door. Must have been like ten other kids in my room taking turns at playing.

TV on their countertop, plugged in for Mario 3 (or any other game if you really wanted) like an NES arcade business. Ppl would go there & pay to play during lunch hour. Needless to say, most of us just watched because 5 minutes of SMB3 was such a fleeting experience. It probably sounds crazier than it was because they might charge $1 for 5 minutes or something which for kids wanting to preview games instead of renting &/or before buying it was alright. No one was ever there for more than 10-15 mins.

Must have been like ten other kids in my room taking turns at playing. I think the main reason I was envious of the SNES was that its controller had more buttons. 6 compared to the Sega's 3. I mean, later on Sega released a 6 button controller too, but most of its games were still only configured to use 3. Whereas majority of SNES games used 4-6 of its buttons. Seems shallow to me now, but it was such a cool thing to mash buttons as a kid. But yes, there were some awesome games in Sega that just didn't have equivalents in SNES. Like Golden Axe or Streets of Rage.

The Lion King was really good, that was one of my favourite games back then. The Aladdin was pretty good too but I think it was very different depending on what console you had it for. How old are you then if you had a Master System? People in the UK especially and Europe generally like Sega better because I guess they had better distribution there and most US fans of the 16-bit era will probably say SNES for the same reason. Maybe it also depends on the console you had as a kid. Yeah in America it seemed like the SNES was the more popular of the two but in Europe I think the Genesis actually sold better. That's like how last gen the Xbox was more popular in America but the PlayStation was more popular in Europe.

I got a genesis and snes christmas 1990. Well, technically they were mine (i was 13) and my brothers (he was 14). We would buy a game for either so our library was pretty large. SNES had great games, but liked the sega library more. I loved side scrollers, adventure, action, but me and my brother would buy a shit ton of sports games too. Sega had better and more sports games imho all the way to dreamcast.

It probably sounds crazier than it was because they might charge $1 for 5 minutes or something which for kids wanting to preview games instead of renting &/or before buying it was alright. No one was ever there for more than 10-15 mins. It was such a different time. I think SMB3 might be the most hyped video game in history. I remember watching the advertisement, er movie, The Wizard as a kid and man did it make you crave that game (and unfortunately, the terrible Powerglove which looks cool but sucks to use). Games were expensive then, too; it was probably 50 bucks a pop which with inflation was considerably more than a 60 dollar AAA game today. So most of the time it was rentals or you really had to pick and choose your game to beg your parents for. At least for my family, asking them to buy a game was not usually an option except for birthdays or Christmas. I kid you not, though, when my mom came home from work and flashed up that yellow box of a game on release day that not even my rich kid friend had gotten first (he got a fucking Neo Geo when it came out), a couple of friends and I dropped our bikes and started chanting "Mario! Mario! Mario!" and it was one of the most memorable moments of my life. It was an event and the neighbor kids begged to come over to play (naturally, they were invited; you don't keep something like Mario 3 to yourself). You just don't have that now, at least with games.
