No Citgo Sign in LF?
Some rumors that the 1914 WS was fixed or that the Athletics laid down to put the screws to Connie Mack. Some supposed heavy wagers placed by 1919 gambler Sport Sullivan. No real evidence. I think people needed an explanation for such an improbable tale as the Miracle Braves. They were a lot like the 1969 Mets. A team that had been God awful for years, buried by July, caught fire, won the pennant and whupped a team in the Series that looked 100x better on paper.

They thought he was a miser. The Federal League beckoned for some. Four HOFers played their last (meaningful) game for Mack in Game 4 of the 1914 Series. Gettysburg Eddie Plank, Chief Albert Bender, Home Run Baker and Eddie Collins. The 1910-1914 A's were the best team of the Deadball Era. The 1915 A's lost 109 games. The 1916 A's were probably the worst team in history.
