artcurus - What part of the political/religious threads outnumber the film and TV threads didn't you understand? Not to mention the bickering. Honestly this site seems to be Pro Troll. Because many of those threads are started by the same group of posters. We don't clear out redundant threads. One more time, The Politics/Religion boards are their own ecosystem. Sane posters are going to The Watercooler, The Sandbox, and The Soapbox. It's not rocket science. Many of those trollers actually DO post in the rest of the board, and most the time, they are civil. We check posting history.

artcurus well I can see where the trolling comes from now with your attitude. Why is it their own ecosystem? That doesn't make any sense, they are still part of this forum and their behaviour effects others.

1/ The moderation on most forums is shockingly bad and often biased. The mods will go after easy targets and tend to be in a clique with the worst trolls. Quite often anyway. 2/ Anonymity allows people to post crap and abuse people. I don't mind if you disagree with my opinion but there is no need to abuse me just because you disagree. Again, a good Mod and Admin should be addressing that kind of behaviour. Stop this kind of childish crap so people know that the best thing to do is report it rather than fire back with more abuse. 3/ Politics. I have to say it. This is a movie/TV forum yet most of the threads are political one way or another. This also sparks aggression and things get heated. So yeah I relate 100%, I joined here to discuss film and TV, I did get involved in some political chats but it's not why I am here and it does kind of annoy me that politics is what this site is really about. Or maybe it is just the aggression involved in those threads. I don't know but the bottom line is that movies and TV is an escape for me, I don't need to be getting abused or seeing thread after thread about something political, even if I don't open the thread, I still see the title. The site needs direction and the trolls need to be dealt with. 1. Because it's like this on "most forums" doesn't necessarily mean it will be like this here. 2. This board was started as a new home for the former IMDb community when they shut down. Over there, there was hardly any human moderation, just bots. The communities got used to a bit of lax moderation. We've been actually more active than IMDb used to be regarding trolls and abuse, but a lot of the actions are not seen by the members (for example, if someone gets a warning by PM, only the warned person sees it). Moderation can't ever please everybody and is a thankless job - we moderators are volunteers who work hard (for free, mind you) to improve the experience for everybody else, but when you try to curtail someone, human nature is such that the curtailed person reacts with anger. So we work hard and give to this place lots of hours, and most of the the time we only collect anger and criticism, so, not fun, eh? But that's OK. We volunteered to do it and we can only try our best to do it well. 3. Our society has become very political especially in recent times. This is hardly a phenomenon that is exclusive to IMDBv2. If you open the comments section in any Yahoo article for example, any unrelated topic will always have comments that say Trump this or Obama that. People who want to exclusively discuss films and TV can go to the specific boards and ignore the Politics or Religion boards. If you are abused you have two remedies - report it to the mods, and/or block the person who abused you. I hope you'll continue to enjoy IMDbv2.

@johnthehumble or I can just leave which will be what I will probably end up doing. Well, that's your prerogative. People should only be somewhere if it is pleasurable and they feel comfortable. The Internet is a pretty rough place (mostly because of the anonymity factor - most people wouldn't say in civilized and polite real life company, what they say under a screen name which is why you need moderators here but short of the Courts, you hardly need moderators in real life). For their own sake, it would be desirable for people who want to enjoy this kind of experience - posting in a forum - to develop some tolerance for these behaviors which are common fare everywhere, but if they don't, then there are plenty of other opportunities for entertainment and fulfillment out there. Nobody *needs* to post on message boards if the experience doesn't agree with them.

But as I mentioned this site is Pro Troll.

Another word about moderation being a thankless job: members will *almost always* perceive it as either too little, or too much. Very rarely someone will say that it is just right. If we are too strict people will say it is hindering discussion and curtailing their freedom of expression. If we are more lenient people will say we're letting the trolls and the rude people run the place.
I moderated for many years on other boards, and hardly saw people expressing a lot of satisfaction with the moderation. Again, it's human nature.
But I'd say that it is often better to have moderators than not.

@johnthehumble I have also been a mod on a few sites as well as an Admin and this site is a mess. You will find the aggression levels and trolling will just increase over time and the purpose for the site which is movies and TV will be barely be mentioned at all.
You have set the bar low.

But as I mentioned this site is Pro Troll. I was a moderator on one of the largest boards on the internet for American Idol. This board was something like in the top 4 or 5 boards for American Idol, it currently has 123,536 members and in it's time, was averaging 700+ post a day. I was dealing with preteens, teens, some unstable adults ( thrown in just for fun) and regular posters. It was a three ring circus on a GOOD night, utter hell on a bad night. We had many trolls, poster who loved to start fights, and other issues. The board didn't die because of trolls. Most of the posters here are learning to ignore the worst ones.

Really it s a combination of anonymity and most people thinking everything little thing they dont agree with is 'nasty' and have a full on breakdown over it. Every now and then someone goes too far but for the most part I think it is how people react to things. The internet needs thicker skin and accountability.

We are just getting started. We are patient folks. We often will give people some opportunities to shape up before more radical action. But if you don't like our style, there are more than 60 other boards that were created (or already existed for the same purpose) after IMDb shut down, so I'm sure you'll find another one that is more to your liking.

I mean sometimes I find trolls entertaining and reg posters boring or annoying but I dont get to dictate that the people I find boring or annoying cant post. If someone is annoyed by someone or something why is it up to the site to fix it for them? to cater to them? In real life who protects you from all these people?

Yes, somebodywicked, sometimes people need to fight their own battles. "This poster was mean to me" is often not something the moderators will try to fix. When certain lines are crossed, though, there will be action, and there has been. But like I said, the actions are often unseen by the members at large so sometimes it gives the impression of inaction.

I find it sad that wanting a peaceful experience online is seen as something wrong here. That is really disturbing.

But the thing is just because something disturbs your peace doesnt mean it disturbs anyone elses. Why is it so hard to just not read something you dont want to read or not respond to someone you feel is a troll? You give people online way too much power. If I dont want to read something no one is making me so I dont. If I dont like someone I can simply pretend they arent there without any help. I can decide I just dont care. You are giving all that power to other people.

Bad Juju, who said that wanting a peaceful experience online is something wrong?
We've just been saying that we decided to set the bar at a certain height due to some historical characteristics of the now defunct IMDb and our hope to provide a similar experience to communities that have existed there for a decade and a half. This style might not be to your liking so maybe you'll find something different, that agrees more with you. Good luck in finding a place you can be happy with. If you want, I can PM you a list of 60 different places, you might then try them one by one and see if one of the other options fits better your standards.
