In the three short weeks this forum has been online, 35 users have been banned, and plenty of others have received warnings and requests to modify their behavior. Some think there should be no moderation, while others think we should be more aggressive. I do not believe in an "all or nothing" philosophy, but rest assured that this is not a forum where trolls and troublemakers are allowed to roam free. It should probably also be noted that ultimatums are not persuasive, and as such, any decision to take action is not influenced by threats to leave the forum if we don't give in to demands. Wow, have there really been 35 bannings in just three weeks?! That's quite a bit! I agree that is a lot. I personally never for any reason plan to report anyone. I dont for any reason want anyone banned or given a warning or posts deleted because of me. I dont care how mean someone is to me I defend their right to do so. I dont need anyone to agree with or defend me. I hope a lot of people will come around to this and get on board. If we all stop reporting each other and brush things off, defend ourselves...

That's sadly the norm for a lot of message boards no matter where you go. Unless the moderation on those forums are very strict, or super efficient.

35 is ~1.5% of 2,500. That's not so much, and a good share of them were porn flooders and people who only came here to tell everyone to fuck off or whatever. The decision to ban someone is based upon their entire posting history. Some mods like to warn, but I prefer to just ban and move on. Too many good people here to spend a lot of time and effort on the ones who contribute nothing but trouble.

It's pointless to be a part of a message board which doesn't protect against trolls, flamers, and the wretched refuse of online dickheads. I'm very appreciative of this board for taking seriously the need to put such people in their place, which is somewhere else.

I figure of you hear about an even volume of folks bemoaning that you are too strict as you hear griping that you are too lenient that you will have the majority giving you a quiet thumbs up. That's about as "moderate" as you can get. I appreciate the level of moderation that is being provided here.

The moderation level here is fine from my perspective. I don't visit every section, but I haven't run into any major problems or anything. You guys are doing your jobs fine.

If everyone was civil to each other, we would stay out of everything and nobody would even know we were here. The rules are simple: Don't post porn, don't dox, don't wave vulgar banners, and don't be a dick for the sake of being a dick. I'm not sure why that's so difficult for so many people, or why they don't understand that the squeaky wheels are ones that get the grease.

But ones notion of what being a d!ck is could be all subjective. How do you define that? When there is a debate going on and a point gets challenged, those that aren't open or aware about the challenge, could suddenly perceive the response as being d!ckish. If posters get called out on something, it doesn't mean that the so-called adversary is being a d!ck. The operative words are "for the sake of."

I can get behind the whole porn thing and doxxing but who cares if someone is being a dick? That should be something were someone just can ignore someone or fight their own battles. Once you start trying to make people be nicer to each other you might as well tuck us all in at night and read us bedtime stories. Actually bedtime stories sound kinda awesome. I want a bedtime story.

treat others as you would wish to be treated yourself. clear discussions to understand each other. trying to calmly present our point of view. controlling our emotions or perhaps a slightly thicker skin at times. not that difficult. pleasant to everyone. conducive to learning. lets talk

Generally speaking, if people like that are just allowed to roam free, it won't be long before people like that are all there is. When I look at someone's post history, I'm looking for anything of actual substance. If 100 out of 100 posts are nothing but "fuck you," "eat shit," and "DIAF," why would I tell everyone else to use the block feature? Do you think that having the ability to hold your nose is what gives someone the right to fart in an elevator? You don't remove the crowd from the troublemakers; you remove the troublemakers from the crowd.

Posting history is essential. Everybody can have a bad day and snap but if all that a member does is a series of insults with no real contributions to a discussion, it's a pretty clear indication that the member is useless for the community.

I agree. and thanks for understanding people can have a bad day -- I always tell my writing students: not all nice people are nice all the time. Wally and the Beave went off every once in a while. same with 'brats' -- heck, what I wouldn't GIVE to have a kid like Bart Simpson in my class! he at least sat down!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The sad thing about insults without contributions... many of those culprits do a wonderful job of pulling the wool over their bosses/HR's eyes. On O-IMDB I ran across people with no less than 15 sock accounts, all used to trap and harass people who have literally done nothing wrong to the sock people. I don't know how many times I have read messages like... be right back, I have to switch computers.... so that means that this person has enough disposable income to own multiple 'abuse avenues'. It really is true... the wrong people have the money!

A better question is this: Why are there so many Off Topic threads in this forum section which is actually solely devoted to asking and answering Film and TV trivia? Can people post these sorts of threads elsewhere? I agree with watchitmovie. Its clogging up this section.

because it is the first section up top. i'd rather things like this than dickpicks like how it used to be on the O-IMDB soapbox.

I want a bedtime story. Everyone knows that Admin realizes s/he can't cause people to be nice and has no intention to try to. There are many levels of dickhood/dickdom: 1) Your common, everyday dick who's used to calling a perfect stranger a "moron", who says things like his followers are delusional and uninformed; then, 2) The dick who's promoted him/herself to more emotional and/or personal attacks - "What is it with you? Your woman left you for him?! "; then, 3) The dick who comes to the site for no reason other than to poop the party, who initiates insulting threads and who chronically writes insulting posts against the site and its members; and, 4) The dick who threatens violence. Of the above dicks, IMHO, the last two are trolls and such should be disciplined. Of the above dicks, IMHO, the last two are trolls and such should be disciplined. For trollhood/trolldom.
