I often have wondered what motivates a troll. In my case, I actually think it was jealousy. This one woman took a severe disliking to me, and this led to a kind of obsession on her part. She ended up following me from board to board and would only respond to my posts. The responses had nothing to do with the subject at hand; instead, she'd write, "well, that's because you're stupid," or "your ego is out of control, why don't you just shut the *beep* up for a change?" Soon, two other people jumped on the bandwagon and began attacking me. And when I say I did nothing to ANY of them, that's the God's honest truth. All I did was exist.
The main troll followed me over to the board discussing the Annie remake from 2014. There, she took it upon herself to label me a racist with every post. Then she "claimed" she was putting me on ignore, which she did indeed do, for a while. But her curiosity got the better of her, and she went off ignore and began attacking me again. If I stood up for myself, it ignited a deluge of posts from her and the little group she commanded. At one point, she posted a link to the FBI, claiming I'd made a "terrorist threat" toward her (which I hadn't). Soon after that, someone sane stepped in and warned her she was on shaky ground. INSTANTLY, she accused this person of being a "sock puppet," just "one more fake identity" I'd created for myself. Whenever someone took up for me, she'd trot out the sock puppet attack. Then, one day, I signed on and discovered she was gone. And so were all her messages, which left huge blank spots on many threads. I found out from one poster that this woman had stepped over the line once too often, and that's why her account was detonated.
A month later, she came back under a different name, but with the same posting style and same insults. She was caught, her account delete AGAIN, and she disappeared...for two months. That's when she came back as a man named "Bookmanmovielover." Thus began her greatest attempt at destroying me, and it was all because I'd won the battle against her merely by doing NOTHING. The only way I could deal with Bookman was to pretend she didn't exist, but she posted everywhere I went again. The only thing that ended her abuse and harassment was the deletion of the message boards.

I noticed that too. I haven't posted much, but the first time I did, someone replied in an snarky tone. I felt like I was back on the other board. For some reason, I had the feeling that this board would be different. I don't know why. Probably all of the trolls from there migrated over here.

~~Probably all of the trolls from there migrated over here.~~
oh no they have not! really, I know it has only been a few weeks but it is really benign here. O-IMDb used to have trolls with none less than 15 [yeah, that's right 15] sock accounts. so you write one thing that was misconstrued and you had 15 + [cause you know they all had cronies] people harassing you and degrading you about it.
example... without going into the really bizarre details, a poster wrote how she is 25 years old, doesn't know how to drive, lives with her mother who signed her up for this special needs program at a nearby college. like, they learn how to ride the bus and check out library books special needs. but this girl writes like she is not special needs and insists she won academic awards in high school...
so with all that going on, I write: gosh, I am amazed you haven't killed yourself. as in: good for you but I wouldn't blame you if you did.
EVERYONE ELSE took that to mean that I told her to kill herself! you can't win with asstwats.

The politics area is much the same, including politics seeming to want to migrate from forum to forum, I mean from threads in one area to those in another. Some members seem to think the entire board is a politics board and they cannot not bash Trump. Oops, here we go. It's a shame for any message board when a newcomer is treated rudely. What's worked in the past, on a message board I've been familiar with, is in such a case that current members then set the rude person straight. Because a message board should always welcome new members, not repel them. Members of a message board should repel its rude members. One of my pet peeves is always a rude member treating a newbie rudely.

Yes, it's great when another poster comes to your defense...but when I signed up here, "Silent Siren" was already a big dog on the block, with posts just kissing the magical 500 mark. She had more posts that the administrators! So, she was shown a certain deference by other members. But with me, I irked her, and she turned both barrels on me, firing continuously. Only when someone else joined in (who shall remain nameless, but he's still on the board) did I actually complain to an administrator. I didn't want the woman removed, I just wanted her to tone it down. Instead, she left!

Read under "I Need to Know," the thread, "has anyone been banned from this site?" That's where you'll find Silent Siren's friend, who showed a nasty side of himself in that thread, before leaving with his tail between his legs.

Honestly, I don't agree that people on message boards are nasty or rude. Yes, there are occasional trolls that post pointless nonsense but they don't bother me because I don't interact with them. Many people on IMDb seemed to get upset when people don't agree with them about a political view or even a movie. If someone disagrees with you it does not mean they are being 'nasty'. I just means that they have a different view to you and maybe you should grow up if that bothers you. For example, any time I hear people praising a movie that I don't like, I shut them down instantly. I tell them that they are talking bullshit and I explain why that is the case. If people get offended over my opinion, then that is on them. I have to deal with these babies so often and frankly it's pathetic. I don't get offended any time someone tells me they don't like Trump. I don't get offended by the idiots that like Harry Potter. Disagreeing is not 'nasty' you sad little snowflakes.

Trolls are harmless and never abusive. They are just people that say dumb, stupid shit because they have no job, no girlfriend and no life.
