interesting list. mandarich - offensive lineman correct? van poppel - pitcher for the As? jefferies - i remember he was on the Phils for a bit (mets too correct?) - seemed like a mean spirited S.O.B - i remember he was decent but i guess he never lived up to expectations - had a reputation for being a dick russell - feel for the guy - substance / weight issues adu - yeah - he actually played for Philly's soccer team - kid was supposed to be a phenom at like 14 sucks when some of these guys don't live up to expectations after being drafted - was van poppel just a complete bust or did he have a respectable career? www.baseball-reference.com/players/v/vanpoto01.shtmlVan Poppel was highly rated coming out of HS. Consensus #1 pick but he wanted a King's Ransom. The Braves had the #1 overall, passed on TVP and took a signable HS SS, Larry Jones, aka Chipper. Mandarich was the greatest OL coming out of Michigan State. But he couldn't juice in the NFL. Next three picks, Barry Sanders, Derrick Thomas, Deion Sanders. Jefferies had a respectable career but he was bred from the cradle to be a HOF player. Adu was called "The Next Pele" at age 14. Who the hell could live up to shit like that? JaMarcus was a reach. Never was that good, even at LSU I never knew Chipper's real name was 'Larry'

Tony Mandarich Todd Van Poppel Todd Marinovich Gregg Jefferies JaMarcus Russell Freddy Adu Thos T first names sure under performed back in the day. I remember one of my dads Sports Illustrated covers from when I was a kid declaring Mandarich "The BEST O Line rookie EVER" when he was drafted. He was a top 5 pick and every other guy in the top 5 are in the Hall of Fame. Another victim of the curse? How about Roberto Aguayo? All time leading kicker in the acc. 3rd best NCAA. 2nd round pick by the Bucs. Released this week after too many missed field goals and even worse. Extra points

Finally got around to seeing that 30 for 30 piece on ESPN about the Buffalo Bills and their 4 failed Super Bowl Appearances. Was tremendous. Scott Norwood came off as such a great classy stand up guy. Stood up to the media like a man - you see his wife consoling him after the game - he's brought to tears a couple of times being interviewed. Some of those guys - it's got to be 'mental' - in fact - you get to that level in the game - you're great - it's all mental after that.

As a life long Braves fan I remember Van Poppel's agent made it clear that Todd would NOT play for the Braves if selected. Oakland took him and he refused to sign anything other than a major league contract. He was a perfect example of a young athlete that would have benefited from fewer yes men and someone that actually cared about his future.

good one. wished this team held onto Mike Richards and Jeff Carter who went on to win Cups. last time this team had an 'elite' superstar was Lindros. Giroux is a fraud.

There's not enough difference in college and pro kicking to account fora guy like Aguayo's drop in consistency otherwise.

Mandarich's double in the NBA is Darko Milicic. Second overall picks in their respective drafts that had all time talents.
2003 NBA draft ========== 1. LeBron James 2. Darko Milicic 3. Carmelo Anthony 4. Chris Bosh 5. Dywane Wade
1989 NFL draft ========== 1. Troy Aikman 2. Tony Mandarich 3. Barry Sanders 4. Derrick Thomas 5. Deion Sanders
You can make the argument that the other NFL players were better than the other NBA players. Mandarich had a better career than Milicic, I would argue.

You get to that level in that position - you're Elite - no other explanation other than there's something going on in his head

is Beano Cook still alive? i'm sorry - I know we all get old and deserve to work - but Vitale and Holtz in their old age still entertain me during their last 'hurrah' so to speak - Beano was kind of out of it. But he was better than Bill Polian - that ain't saying much

But he was better than Bill Polian - that ain't saying much Holtz is entertaining on College Game Day in a laugh at him kind of way. If you find his lisp painful on TV you will enjoy this. A frined of mine forced me to listen to Holtz's show on a Sirius golf channel. I almost leaped out of the car after 5 minutes. Listening to golf is worse than watching or playing it. Add Lou to the mix and it could replace water boarding. I did check his coaching record recently and was a bit surprised to see it was actually pretty damn solid. After the player paying scandal under his ND tenure broke he kind of sucked though.

Smith, Colin Cowherd, Skip Bayless, etc etc all you want - just entertain me - and Holtz does that - which is rather shocking in a way being what an iconic coach he was - figured he'd be a little more reserved than a cartoon character.
