As far as I am concerned, "DUEL" is the Number 1 Best Chase Movie Ever Made!

It's really good and when it comes to Spielberg, I feel it's often overlooked because it was a television movie. But as far as chase movies go, my tops for the #1 spot are tied between SPEED, The Fugitive, and North by Northwest.

...great film, the villain was the semi tractor, and never seeing the driver made it all the more terrifying...

The movie is good, sure, but the Richard Matheson short story (of the same name) is a much better read than the film is a watch. The same goes for Matheson's companion piece to Duel, Prey - also a TV movie with Karen Black, part of the Trilogy of Terror (1975).

I personally consider it the single greatest film Spielberg made prior to Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Hearing the protagonist's thoughts seems a dated and unnecessary tough, but otherwise, it is pretty much perfect. And I like the Matheson story, too.

Great film made on I'm guessing, a very small budget. Best car chase movie that's for sure.

Its very good. I love that for a while you arent sure if the protagonist is just crazy. Best chase movie that comes to mind is Apocalypto.

Great suspense car-chase thriller, and very influential on many other cat-and-mouse chase thrillers.

Interesting Fact - Steven Spielberg actually (and unintentionally) appears in the Movie Twice!
1 Time was when Dennis Weaver was in the Phone Booth calling the Police (You can see Steven Spielberg's reflection in Phone Booth window). I am not sure about the other time though!

I do like Jaws and greatly appreciate it for its ushering in of the modern blockbuster, but it's not actually one of my favourites. Maybe I just saw it too late in life (in 2010 at the age of 26), but it just didn't have the same impact on me that some other 70s classics have had. I went in expecting a Jurassic Park-quality movie and ended up being mildly underwhelmed. Again, I do like it and it's well directed, but I still think Spielberg has made a lot better.

mel gibson on spielberg:
"The first film of Steven's I saw was Duel (1971). It was amazing. I was 19 and I went to see it and it was really, really compelling. And then there were all these stories: "The guy made it for no money!" I'm like, "Wow, that's kind of brilliant." And it was really brilliant. He's a master - so many great films. One of the best he made, people hardly recognized him for it: Empire of the Sun (1987). Phenomenal movie! The thing that bothered me about that was it seemed like nobody noticed, but it was this masterpiece!"

The old truck is still around: They actually used 3 of those Trucks! LOL! Obviously the one that went over the hill would have been too costly to restore.
