i think it was too much of a genre film to win. Hacksaw, Gibson's reputation aside, may have had too much action.

Well, SJW fools from Buzzfeed have labeled it as being "too white" considering that it takes place in LA. While "Moonlight" is a film about gay black guys.
Get the picture?

Honest Trailers does a good job in explaining why films get nominated and win. Yes, I've seen that.

Moonlight is a better film. The performances, screenplay and direction are better than La La Land's. Moonlight had more of an emotional impact on audiences and is a more powerful film with substance. La La Land is enjoyable, but doesn't have the same power and impact as Moonlight. This.

Hey "Moonlight" had me empathizing with a gay black kid, so that was an eye-opener. Chazelle, sorry there mate! For those that are gay, it is not an eye opener, only for those shockable heterosexuals who take their sexuality for granted. The film just got slower as it progressed, not better, and Chiron's revelation to Kevin at the end that he had never been with anyone else since they were kids on the beach, and how Kevin was still "obviously" struggling with his own predicament of conforming to what he didn't really want as a life, wasn't that exciting either. THERE WASN,T EVEN ANY PASSIONATE SEX BETWEEN THEM, ONLY A BRIEF SCENE OF SNUGGLING. What a cop-out for an independent film! Americans are still nauseated and fearful of portraying gay sex in films. How come Europe and Australasia isn't? You clearly were not paying attention when you watched the beautiful and brilliant MOONLIGHT Toasted Cheese, Kevin gave Chiron a hand job during that scene. This is a subtle and superbly made movie of great social and emotional depth and judging by some of your comments on this thread, you missed many of its nuances. I suggest you watch it again with an open mind and an open heart. Perhaps you will understand it better on a second viewing.

Moonlight won on merit. It is the better film. Having not seen either of them, I think it sucks for Moonlight that it will forever sit with an asterisk next to it because of the tainted cloud of knee-jerk politics and so forth associated with its win. And maybe people would've forgotten that if not for the absolute CIRCUS that occurred in announcing its win. I don't know anyone who takes the Oscars seriously, but even among my cynical friends there seems to be an unspoken level of illegitimacy to really all of the winners this year. Just kind of a "roll your eyes, shrug, and move on" sort of mentality. Meanwhile, it's made me less excited to see either of these films and basically unable to do so without viewing it through a highly politicized lens. "Oh well."
