76ers have just 3 NBA titles. That's not a bad record and in fact above average but why does it appear as if 76ers are more special than most other clubs? There is always an air that 76ers are as legendary as Lakers and Celtics but those two have so many NBA titles. I am not an American so may not be aware of some cultural significance related to 76ers.

I am not an American so may not be aware of some cultural significance related to 76ers. Both teams were before my time - other NBA/Sixers fans - correct me if I'm wrong - '67? that era sound right? Wilt? They were considered a legendary team - and Wilt is considered by some to be the greatest basketball player of All-Time. The 1983 team - before my time as well - is considered by some basketball experts as the 'Greatest Team Ever' with Doc, Moses, Toney and Cheeks. Allen Iverson - took the Sixers to the 2001 NBA Finals against the Lakers is considered revolutionary - not only as a player but also 'Mainstream' pretty much regarded as the first NBA player to transcend old school hoops where 'cornrows' in your hair and dressing like a rap/R&B artist was acceptable and 'cool' - he defined 'cool' and what every kid growing up with a ball in his hands wanted to be. That being said - Philly is around #5 or so in the biggest markets in the U.S. - and is arguably (I said arguably New York, Boston, Chicago) the greatest sports town in the U.S. Passionate sports fans who love hoops. Fast forward to today - when those of us that have been patient with 'The Process' for years - strip everything down and swap assets for assets for years - forget about short term and look at long term - it should be taught in MBA Classes - you can't help fans salivate at the thought of Embiid, Simmons, Fultz and the future that lies ahead.

I am not an American so may not be aware of some cultural significance related to 76ers. They are usually considered the third best franchise in NBA history. That is more because of relevance and talent instead of titles. The Sixers of the 60s and 80s are widely considered to be some of the best teams ever, with the 67 Sixers and the 83 Sixers usually being in most experts top 5 lists when mentioning greatest teams ever. There were years when it was a forgone conclusion that it would be Sixers/Boston in the ECF. Also, if you are doing an 'all' team, they would be the third best team with players like Shayes, Irving, Moses, Wilt, Jones, Iverson, Cheeks, etc. No one can compare to the Celtics and Lakers as far as historical success, but the Sixers were up there for a long time.

why does it appear as if 76ers are more special than most other clubs? It doesn't. They're not. First game of the Season is being televised on ESPN - Sixers vs. Wiz. I'm a huge John Wall fan too. Should be interesting to see Wall vs. Simmons/Fultz - whoever they have running at PG - who everyone is expecting to be Simmons right now - talk about being thrown to the wolves - I like it

why does it appear as if 76ers are more special than most other clubs? It doesn't. They're not. Fair enough. It's is your personal view just like mine. I always had a feeling that 76ers always exudes a lot more buzz than most other teams even when it is doing not so well on court. I also see 76ers fans as having lot more attachment to their team than average fans of other teams have attachment to their teams. I am a Rockets fan by the way. @screamingtreefrogs It seems that people like Wilt and Iverson (later has cult status I guess) have made it such a popular team. And of course the great teams they had at different point of time in their history.

People were in a frenzy when the Sixers went to the Finals in 2001. It really is a giant basketball town. College hoops is huge around here too - 'Nova, Temple, Penn, LaSalle, St. Joes - hell throw Drexel and Delaware in there too. Flyers - out of the 4 major sports here - it's the biggest 'cult' out there IMO - I mean they can do no wrong according to the fanbase - surprised there aren't any other Orange and Black fans here. Haven't won a Cup since '75 and the old school cultish fans still bow at the alter of Bobby Clarke, Ed Snider and The Broadstreet Bullies.
