I understood most of it but I had to step out twice during the movie for less than 2 to 3 minutes on each occasion. So at this point, I know I missed out on something key things, enough to get confused of...the order in which things happened?
1. What was the deal with the fat lady at the beginning? Nothing was mentioned of her again.
2 Is that really Jake Gyllenhaal as both the husband/victim and past boyfriend of Amy Adams? Did I miss something?
3. Are all these characters supposed to represent her? ?
4. Why was Jake G. a no show at the end and what is it supposed to signify?

SPOILERS AHEAD.
1. An exhibition of performance art at the gallery owned by Susan (Amy Adams) and her filthy rich husband (Arme Hammer), who is cheating on her. Susan has all the money and possessions anybody could ever want, but her life is empty
2. Gyllenhaal,s character (Edward) was married to Susan many, many years before - when he was a poor, young struggling writer, who she said would never succeed. Not only did she cheat on him with Hammer,s character, but she aborted his baby. None of her new friends even know she was once married to Edward - who she has not seen for years. One day Edward has his first novel delivered to her on the eve of its publication. She takes it home, sends her staff away and settles in for the weekend to read it.
3. The powerful novel - which unfolds as a film within a film - is metaphorical and the Isla Fisher character represents Susan when she was married to Edward. India (Ellie Bamber) represents the child of theirs that Susan aborted. India's husband Tony (also played by Gyllenhaal) represents Edward.
4. Edward does not show because his revenge is complete.
Dude, I hope I have said enough - without giving too much away, to encourage you to watch this gripping film again. Hopefully next time you will pay attention, every detail propels the plot forward.

Yeah, basically if you get that the story with the guy and his family in west Texas was the novel the ex wrote, it all makes sense. You must have stepped out at just the wrong time.
