In a brand new article journalist Jamie Jackson considers the possibility of a Rooney call-up when Southgate announces his England squad later on this week for the upcoming qualifiers versus Malta and Slovakia. Rooney, "knocking in" goals for Everton (2) must be in contention, says Jackson, and Lallana's current injury seems to be one of the reasons that may warrant Rooney's inclusion. He last played for England back in November against Scotland at Wembley. Rooney burning brightly for Everton

Absolutely he should. I'm sorry, but if guys like Lallana and Ross Barkley can regularly get picked when they are fit, then Rooney should absolutely be picked ahead of these two fools!
Rooney may not have the lightning pace he once had, but he has a good football brain, can pick out a pass, good vision, excellent eye for goal (top English scorer this season), high work rate, I think he ran 11km last night which was more than any other player on the field, so why would you NOT take him?
We have a problem in this country, we keep writing off people when they reach 30. Look at the Italians, they were still accommodating Pirlo till he was almost 40, when you compare that to the English Pirlo, Scholes, we sidelined him before he even reached 30. (Not that Rooney is a Pirlo or a Scholes you understand)
Fair enough, when someone wasn't very good in the first place, like, I dunno, Emile Heskey, then you get rid as soon as you can, but Rooney still has more to offer than most English players.
So it is a big fat yes from me.

Apart from his goal he did nothing last night. He gave away possession more than once and the only passes he made that found a colleague were those he knocked backwards to defenders. He is a celebrity player in the Everton team, a la Beckham.

Where's the option for 'England will be crap regardless so it doesn't matter'?

Depends. I don't mind him being there but Kane is top dog now.

Southgate must have told him "you're not in my plans". Best teenager I have ever seen in my life though. As a complete player he was better than Messi, bet than Ronaldo, better than Giggs at the same age. I think the booze and fags probably took its toll, as those lightning reflexes and ability to steal a yard on a defender were gone by the time he was 23, if not before. Edit: Actually I think Fat Ronaldo was better at the same age, and I didn't see Maradona, but still, great player in his prime, still a very, very good player past his prime.

Probably told him he'd be a bench player and he didn't fancy it.
