Tombstone (1993) - Easily his best role
Top Gun (1986) - The volleyball and chomping scenes
Batman Forever (1995) - Saw this on opening day in theaters back then, almost as good as Michael Keaton
Real Genius (1985) - Funky hairdo, LOL!

Batman Forever (1995) - Saw this on opening day in theaters back then, almost as good as Michael Keaton I saw it on opening day too. I was playing the soundtrack for a good while after that too. Awesome movie. Underrated role for Val Kilmer and Batman period. He was a smooth fucker in that movie. A Batman with mojo

in terms of roles the following three grab me the most on the OP's list...
Felon Top Gun Tombstone
but ill say Top Gun is the role ill most affiliate him with even though i like Felon more than Top Gun for the overall movie itself.
even my opinion aside... i am sure Top Gun is either THE role, or pretty close to it, amongst the wide public that they most remember him for. i can't imagine much else giving his Top Gun role a challenge besides maybe Tombstone(?) ; i am speaking in terms of wide public, not personal opinion here.
p.s. that's my order of preference for the movies in general to... 1)Felon(9/10) 2)Top Gun(7-7.5/10) 3)Tombstone(7/10). but Kill the Irishman would be above Top Gun but lower than Felon for me in terms of the movie itself. but... Kilmer's character in Kill the Irishman is not something people would remember (or myself for that matter) in this movie. so i did not list it since the OP specifically asked about 'best roles' which don't necessarily mean 'best movie' even though movie quality will play a factor in determining my choice but obviously his character have to stand out some to.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Looking at his entire filmography the movies of his i scored a 7 or higher are...
1)Felon (2008) - 9/10 (this movie seems to fly off the radar to) 2)Kill the Irishman (2011) - 7.5-8/10 3)Top Gun (1986) - 7-7.5/10 4)Tombstone (1993) - 7/10 5)Deja Vu (2006) - 6.5-7/10
but after checking that, come to think of it... he's been in more quality movies than many other name actors out there.
p.s. all of those are amongst 'my favorite movies'.
@obiwanginobili
Yeah, after i looked at his filmography there are not many out there who have the volume of 7's and higher that he does for me as he's got five movies which i imagine the bulk of name actors out there can't beat him for me.
p.s. my clear #1 in terms of volume of movies i scored a 7 or higher is... Tom Cruise @ 13 movies. he's got the best filmography of anyone out there if you ask me given the volume of quality movies he's been in.

Another severely underrated movie, though sadly Val wasn't given much to do.

Val Kilmer should've gotten more roles. Don't know why he went through or is still doing straight to dvd movies. I want him to make an ultimate comeback
