deadline.com/2017/08/the-joker-origin-movie-todd-phillips-martin-scorsese-scott-silver-batman-dc-universe-1202154053/
From the article: "...the intention is to make an origin story that isn’t part of any other iteration. ...most recently played by Jared Leto in Suicide Squad ...this new film will launch the character with a different actor..."
WTF? Why? First of all doing an origin to this character is akin to killing him. The fact that we DONT know his origin, at least before he fell into the vat of chemicals, is part of what makes him cool.
But to then confuse things by making it a separate and self contained version with yet another actor?
And "This will be the first film under a new banner that has yet to be named in which WB can expand the canon of DC properties?" Seriously, they haven't successfully built the DCEU itself yet and they're already thinking about doing something else? WTF?
Is this a goof?

....and this film will probably get a sequel, a prequel, and then 10 years later a reboot!

Is this a goof? I can't make heads or tails of it. I suspect it's a stealth project to replace Jared Leto if it even happens and that actor in question is well received.

The Joker character seems to work better not knowing everything about him.

Yep, that's right, ladies and gentlemen, there are going to be TWO separate DC film franchises running alongside each other, because WB hates its audience.

Yep, that's right, ladies and gentlemen, there are going to be TWO separate DC film franchises running alongside each other, because WB hates its audience. Actually, it's the opposite. WB is giving its audience more variety in their stories without trying to force-fit them into a shared universe, like MCU is trying to do by forcing their TV shows to connect to the movie universe and failing badly at that.
Not everything has to be connected. I've always said that WB is smart to keep their CW TV shows separate from the movies because it allows them to have more creative freedom in telling different stories without trying to force-fit them into a shared universe, like MCU is trying to do by forcing their TV shows to connect to the movie universe and failing badly at that. This is another case where DC can tell a different story without trying to force-fit it into the DCEU.
If this is true, then this would be a huge coup for WB to get a director of the caliber of Martin Scorsese. Wonder Woman will probably get nominated for a Best Picture Oscar but won't win it, but a movie directed by Martin Scorsese will have a good chance of winning a Best Picture Oscar.

Am I the only one excited for this? Maybe we'll actually get a great DC movie.

LOL at WB "hating" its audience. If anything, Disney does. They crap on creative vision and originality for Marvel, Star Wars, and remakes of their cartoons because they only see us as wallets.

Yes, not knowing The Joker's origin is one of the best things about the character but if they make this a stand alone movie then I think it can work. It is just another take on a great character.
It will take a very good screenplay, director and lead performance to pull off though.

fact that we DONT know his origin, at least before he fell into the vat of chemicals, is part of what makes him cool. Excuse me, but in the comics the Joker has had origin stories and some of the tales--The Killing Joke especially--were fantastic. It all depends on the writing.

Just no. He's not that interesting a main character. He works perfectly as a villain with limited screen time but we don't need to see his daily ins and outs and find out what makes him tick.

You've all raised a few interesting points...
But here's my main issue: I think once you create something you should support that thing, not give an alternative to it. What happens if folks like the 2nd version better than the Leto version? Of course the studio will make a sequel to the 2nd version because money talks. And then what happens to the Leto version? Does he just remain a not very well liked version with no more than a few supporting roles in a handful of movies and then he goes away? That's not the way to uplift one of your main characters and actors.
There's an opportunity here to make this a movie within the main DCEU that they're already trying to establish and give Jared Leto a chance to shine in a truly well written, well directed movie. Jared Leto is talented enough an actor to pull it off if he has a good script and director. That's something I could get behind.
Also, I might be jumping the gun at the part of the article that says this is an origin story. I don't like the idea of Jokers origin being told. Not knowing is part of the allure for him. But Origin doesn't necessarily mean that they're going to give out every detail of his life. Maybe it just means the first few months after he becomes Joker and how he consolidates his power as a crime lord in Gotham(?). If so that could be interesting.
I guess we need to know more, but as of right now it just seems a bit ill advised as a project.
p.s. to be clear Martin Scorcese (the only bright spot as of now) is only attached to the project as a producer, not as the director.

No matter what DC does, idiot DC Fan will praise it. In this case, I actually like it. Leto's Joker was a complete joke. If Scorsese is really making this, which I have to see to believe, then it will probably be pretty epic and I am excited.
Also, Wonder Woman should never even be close to any Best Picture award. I swear DC fans are morons. It was a good movie. That is all. I could never see The Winter Soldier even being nominated in its time and it was way better.
