Interesting movie.
The most interesting aspect is its representation of Doss's perspective on joining the war and his stance on his beliefs. I'm not a religious man but I can respect the integrity his character has in this story. Belief is a hard thing to show in cinema. Especially in war movies. This film does a good job during the first hour with a great focus and balance on his spiritual belief vs military training.
The script is really good. There are some elements that we have seen before in other movies. Especially with the training scenes, the family drama and his dynamic with the other soldiers once they go to war. But it's all very well acted by most. I'm not very fond of Andrew Garfield as an actor but he is good here and very likeable. Vince Vaughan is probably the weakest actor in the movie but he has some good lines with a 50/50 delivery. Hugo Weaving gives the strongest performance. The rest of the supporting cast are decent.
But the best aspect of the movie is the battle scenes and how they are handled in direction and the editing. And the cinematography has some damn fine visuals.
That first battle scene. That is some heavy violence. It just escalates after that. If you watch the movie I hope you like dead bodies and rats. During the second day of battle and Doss questions his faith and starts rescuing his fellow soldiers the drama really gears into overdrive but still masked in incredible tension and violence.
Overall I really liked the movie. A solid war story brilliantly told through cinema. Is it a masterpiece? No. But it is a damn fine movie. I wish Hollywood made more movies like this. If they will spend 250 million on a pile of poop when they could make better movies for 1/5 the cost I'll take another film like Hacksaw Ridge any day.
