It's a very good movie. Very strong performances from Nic Cage, especially since he actually acts in the movie.

Yes, I think its a good film. Not one of Scorsese's best IMO, but still good.

I've heard people say good things about it, but it has 6.8 rating on IMDb, which makes me hesitant to watch it.

I saw it in the theater and don't remember much about it so that's not a great sign. He was an emt and was stressed out. Ving Rhames was in there somewhere. Cage's character may have been strung out. Cage may have been as well.

I recommend it. It comes across as something of a spiritual sequel to taxi driver IMO.

It is rare that I give up on a film by a reputable director, but could not continue with that one past about halfway. I found it too depressing. I normally have no trouble watching good films about tragedies, failure, ill-health, cruelty, etc, so long as they are not exploitative, but for some reason not this one.
That may be to Scorsese's credit. Perhaps he told the tale too convincingly or too realistically? That will take a second viewing (when I am not tired or depressed) to determine.
I had not thought about this film for many years until I watched "The Death of Mr Lazarescu" (2005) the other night. That is another grueling tale of a paramedic and a masterful movie. See my recently started thread in the Classic section.

Absolutely. Scorsese's most underrated movie, and among his overall best.

Yes, it's very unique and strange. Cage, Goodman, and Arquette are great in it.

I've heard people say good things about it, but it has 6.8 rating on IMDb, which makes me hesitant to watch it. I pay no attention to IMDb movie polls. I tend to trust certain professional movie critics, though my favorites, Siskel and Ebert are both gone. I trust what the Academy says about quality in films except when I perceive political reasons for them.

I was only able to watch the first 30 minutes or so, and from what I saw it was pretty good.
