Doghouse6 Re-reading this re-born thread … I now know why the recent Horrible / Dubbins shirttale discussion seemed like deja vu all over again .. complete with same illustrations yet ! At the moment, I can't remember what caused it to come up again, or where it did! And I don't know anything about mess boys eating strawberries.

How about the interracial marriages in 1957's SAYONARA? That was after.
I remember it being said that white-black interracial romance was a no-no in the US--but the earliest I have seen is in The Women of Devil's Island, a 1962 European film. However, it is broken up into different languages so a kissing scene is in one language--I couldnt tell what--obviously one region was ok with it before others, the rest in another. But it seems how widely circulated the film is also makes a difference.
FOX did films with black speaking characters in the early 60s yet played "let's hide the black person" with Fantastic Voyage.

I just don't have the patience. It's just a weird coincidence that he had mentioned THE CAINE MUTINY before I wrote my post.

I've also noticed that that there's inevitably some ground that gets covered in multiple threads, and when it's a film I enjoy as much as this one, well, to paraphrase mattgarth, it's always worth raising Caine.

Understand, the American armed forces were totally segregated during WWII. The only way black men could serve alongside whites was in menial positions, i.e. messboys.
It was after the war, mainly through the efforts of Eleanor Roosevelt, that the armed forces were finally integrated.

It was after the war, mainly through the efforts of Eleanor Roosevelt, that the armed forces were finally integrated. I've often wondered about the one African-American soldier who was front and center during the prayer service scene in the 1949 film BATTLEGROUND.
Possible explanation -- There was a 1952 film with Sidney Poitier that celebrated the unit known as the RED BALL EXPRESS -- they trucked supplies to the troops at the front lines.
So perhaps the BATTLEGROUND soldier was from that unit -- and maybe he got stranded or separated from his unit during the chaos of the Battle of the Bulge.

In the time that has passed since my OP, Trump's behavior has become increasingly more narcissistic and incompetent. More like the Capt. Queeg of the novel, rather than Bogie's battle-weary portrayal, a character deserving of sympathy. In fact, many Republicans who once blindly followed Trump are believing he is unfit to hold any kind of office. I'm still hoping that there will be a "mutiny" that will remove the Orange Baboon from the Oval Office for good!

In fact, many Republicans who once blindly followed Trump are believing he is unfit to hold any kind of office. I'm still hoping that there will be a "mutiny" that will remove the Orange Baboon from the Oval Office for good! Now that it's less than five months away (after three-and-a-half years of each day seeming like a month), I don't want to be cheated out of witnessing a humiliating repudiation by way of his resounding electoral defeat, and for him to know that everyone but his glassy-eyed lemmings have rejected him. Sure, he'll scream "FRAUD," throw tantrums and maybe even try running to the SCOTUS with a fifty-page brief written by Barr and a bunch of hired shysters saying, in effect, "It's not fair, it's not fair!" Well, let him. That will only be confirmation of how much it stings. If you don't mind my saying so, I wouldn't find a mutiny this late in the game half as satisfying.

One of my favorite scenes, when Queeg puts his hand in his pocket and starts clicking the balls.

One of my favorite scenes, when Queeg puts his hand in his pocket and starts clicking the balls. Is that euphemistic symbolism for scratching his testicles? I once had a manager who unwittingly did just that when angry. On the other hand it could be that "a cigar is just a cigar", as one of our more eminent contributors once posted.

One thing does occur to me. If the Caine was in no real danger of foundering in the storm, then the mutineers were unjustified and should have been hanged.
If, on the other hand, it was likely to founder, than Keefer was the likely saviour of hundreds of lives, because there is no way Maryk would have seized command without Keefer having prepared him mentally to do so for many days. It was touch and go even with that "brainwashing".
..................................
Never having read the book, I was unaware of the importance of Keith and May in the novel, and could not understand why so much time was wasted on them in the movie. I agree that a mini-series is required to do the novel justice.

I just read the article about THE DEAD ZONE on Wiki. Ironic that Martin Sheen, who played the Trump-like Stillson would play the liberal POTUS on THE WEST WING. Just goes to show what a good actor he is.

Could Bogart have won an Oscar for playing Queeg if he had been listed as Best Supporting Actor? he could have been listed 3rd in the credits, behind Van Johnson and Fred MacMurray. Best Actor was a slam dunk, no one was going to beat Marlon Brando. But I think Bogie could have beaten Edmund O'Brien. Especially with Rod Steiger, Lee J. Cobb and Karl Malden splitting the "Waterfront Vote".
Admittedly, I don't know if there was a cut and dried formula to determine who was a lead actor and who was supporting.
