Having just watched this movie for the first time after being told to avoid it because it was boring and 'nothing interesting happens' I found this movie to be really good and it has become one of my favorite movies. Cool visuals, intriguing story, intense and suspenseful plot that keeps you guessing.
I don't remember too much the reaction of audiences when this film came out but I remember it bombing at the box office. I only wonder why, and why this movie has a lousy IMDB rating and low audience rating on Rottentomatoes in comparison to the critics ratings. Anyone know? Is this one of those movies where critics loved but movie goers didn't? What are our thoughts on the film?

I have some problems with the movie but overall it is an extremely powerful and very interesting movie. Many parts had a profound impact on me. My favorite part is when she has her first feeling of sympathy during the part with the deformed man. It had such an effect on me that I had to walk out of the movie for a minute. I cried in the bathroom for like 5 min.
I have never seen a movie that so perfectly captured a feeling of existential terror and melancholy.
I don't think it's boring at all but I understand why many people might.
I think it's pretty obvious why it bombed at the BO - It was only released in select theatres and had very little marketing.
Why it has low on imdb is likely because it's not most average moviegoers cup of tea. I bet many people watched it just for Johansson and had no idea the type of movie it is.

It tries to be more of that visual/atmosphere type of movie to sell it but the problem is none of that works and it comes across as a pretty weak movie. so in the end... the highlight of it is Scar Jo nude instead of that being a bonus to a good movie. moviemouthWhile it being released in select theaters might have limited it's $$$ on some level i don't think that type of movie would do well with the masses as it's a bit weird etc.

A beautiful, mysterious and creepy film. One of my favorites of recent years. I liked the film's slow moving and ambiguous nature but this may have limited it's mainstream appeal.

What are our thoughts on the film? An interesting meditation on different film language techniques, and on the nature of loneliness and predatory impulses. Also, an interesting look at restrained acting from a mainstream actress. But, unfortunately, boring as all get out. LOL
