Like, based on what he's directed so far. I have to be honest, I haven't looked at his filmography, because unlike some other people on here I don't look stuff up, but all I know that he's done is the star trek and star wars reboots. And star trek into darkness as well? I can't remember.

Not really. He piggy backs on the success of others and has very little creativity.

INdeed. Would calling him a hack be too strong of a word? I'm gonna say no? Ok? Not really. He piggy backs on the success of others and has very little creativity

He's a competent film maker, but nothing he's done has stood out to me.

He's a competent film maker, but nothing he's done has stood out to me. That's the perfect way to descibe JJ Abrams.

I think that "MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 3", "STAR TREK", and "STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS" are all Great Movies!

I watch his films and I think they're well made. They make me think of other movies. But the next day I barely remember anything about them.

Not really,no.absoulutely nothing special about him. I'm no hater but MI3 and TFA are my least favorites from the respective franchises

as a writer he is a complete and irredeemable hack! One must really keep him from writing as he is devoid of any ideas or originality. He will always copy what has worked before and add some lense flare and a mysterx box, until the bluff is finally called. At that point he is usually long gone anyway...
As a director he is competent but not outstanding. None of his films are unique JJ Abrams style except for the massive and annoying use of lense flare (which is used by others as well but to a lesser degree).

Yes and no.
He's good at what he does but what he does is pretty formulaic.

A good but "safe" director.

Good is a point of view. He is the rebooter of franchises without an iota of fresh ideas.
People say he is competent, but WTF does that even mean? M Bay is competent and arguably technically brilliant. He still make abominable, juvenile movies.
JJ Abrams is just the glib, PC-version of Michael Bay. So no.

Yes, I believe he is a good filmmaker... but not a great one. There's a difference.

Yea, he's good. I've liked or loved most of his movies but just as much as I think people complain too much about him and Force Awakens, I do think people oversell when I hear him being referenced as the new Spielberg or something.

I'm baffled as to why he's as popular as he is. Anything with his name to it audiences flock to. Years ago I made a vow to never watch another film or show he does, unfortunately I had to break that vow for TFA.

Maybe if he tones down the damn lens flairs.

The only movie he directed of any real worth... Mission Impossible III (2006) (7.5-8/10).
