Quite surprised at a lot of love for the orignal Star Wars here. Not that it's a bad movie (it's a classic), but I'm going with Empire.

Empire. The script of A New Hope really lets it down.

The Empire Strikes Back, and quite easily. I see that you gave me a thumbs-up for saying (typing actually) that ONLY Star Wars (1977) and The Empire Strikes Back (1980) are BONA-FIDE classics. Thanks!

Thanks!I agree with that assessment 100%, everything since then has been a disappointment to one extent or another starting with the two-hour toy commercial called Return of the Jedi. I still cringe at all the Jar-Jar Ewoks running roughshod over hardened Imperial Stormtroopers.

I looked up the history in the IMDb top 250 and it turns out that until January 2006, Star Wars was always rated higher than Empire. So even though there was already a massive fanbase for Empire way before 2006 Star Wars was still rated higher than Empire until only 12 years ago (at least on IMDb). In 1996/1997 the gap was huge with Star Wars being at #1/#2 and Empire being at #24/#29. Ever since that January 2006 Empire has always been rated higher than Star Wars, but it's an interesting thing to note and a fun way to see how opinions on movies change over time. Love both, but I'm picking Empire.
