If you actually paid attention to the film, every one of the main characters had a critical part in the film. Slipnot, who a lot of folks think was the most useless character was placed in the story to show the others that the explosive implants were no joke. His sacrifice sent a stern message to the other members of the team. Not only was Boomerang the one who suggested that Slipnot escape, but he was also the one who provided a surveillance camera via his remote controlled boomerang. Croc helped the rest of the support troops get the bomb to the target by fighting off the Enchantress' minions in the underwater sewers. Of course if there was no Harley, we would not have Joker involved in the story. She also helped the audience understand the other characters by psychoanalyzing them with her playful taunts. I did pay attention, and you could take out almost all of them without losing anything or even changing the script.
If you had thought about the movie at all you would have realized,,,,
They didn't need Slipknot to show the bombs were real. They could have exploded one by itself, or used any of the characters if they really felt like killing somebody. There's nothing about the Slipknot character that makes it more appropriate to make him the one for this. It's just randomly assigned to him.
They didn't need Boomerang to provide surveillance either, or to suggest Slipknot try to escape. These aren't things that effect the plot in any way, or even relevant to his character. Again, anybody else could have done this. Have Flagg fly in a drone, have deadshot use a sniper scope. Why is Boomerang there specifically?
Croc didn't help shit. They established they had a team of scuba divers, so the only reason for Croc is to then say those scuba people just could make it in time? I mean the explanation for why they didn't need croc is in the actual movie, so what is Croc doing? Throwing the bomb at the end? Once again, something anybody else could have done.
None of these things have anything to do with a character arc. They're just random things a character does. NO CHARACTER HAS AN ARC. Have you thought about that?
Fighting off the minions? You mean the random unexplained, hey we need some bad guys to show up out of nowhere for an action scene zombie people? Every time they showed up it was like a video game level where there's just bad guys you have to beat suddenly. How do they get made? Are there any left at the end or were they only in the buildings and streets the characters went in? Let's face it, the only reason they exist is so the characters don't get to the bad guy the moment they step off the helicopter. It's not like they provide any story advancement.
If Harley wasn't there, you're right, we would not have had the completely pointless Joker side story that didn't have anything to do with the rest of the movie. Have you realized that if you cut out everything to do with the Joker that nothing changes? That's how poorly thought out this movie is.
And she helps us understand the others, how? By the end of the movie I realize they are all criminals, which I knew at the beginning. How did Harley add anything to them?
Well, sure, you could take out those characters, that is if you were writing the story, but that is not the case. The writer of the story, which happens to be David Ayer, wanted each of these characters to have a purpose in the film and is was as I have explained. As far as your questions, I pretty much answered them in my previous post, so there is no need to explain it again. Now I will add this clip to show the significance of the entire team to the movie (another scene you failed to pay attention to):

Boomerang didn't contribute anything. You take him out of the movie, Slipknot still tries to escape and they still invade Enchantress' lair. Nothing changes.
You take Croc out of the movie, they still get the bomb.
You take Joker completely out and everything else still happens.
You take Slipknot out nothing changes at all, in fact it would probably have been more interesting to keep them guessing about the bombs.
They are useless to the plot.
And oh yes, that ridiculous scene with the sky laser which she built, we have no idea how, and why, because I guess she doesn't like technology? What? There's no purpose to enchantress either. What did not liking technology have to do with this movie? How was that a theme or relevant to anything? If they wanted to make technology a theme, then have a technology villain who actually abuses technology. If they wanted to have a spirtitual theme, then play up the spirit sides of Katana (another useless character), Diablo, and Enchantress, but make her goal to steal souls or something instead of the sky laser. Ya know, tie the plot together. Make that the process that causes the zombies instead of just having them appear for no apparent reason. I just improved the plot 100x. Also it took her the exact amount of time it took the squad to show up in order for her to finish her "smoke cloud machine". How "any RPG you've ever played" of her.

She adds nothing to the plot other than hitting things. Anybody could have picked up the sword at the end. Seriously, she's completely pointless.
Yet she is the character everybody talked about the most in the movie and is getting 'Gotham City Sirens' and 'Harley Quinn and Joker' movies so for a character you claim was pointless it looks like some other people would disagree with you. That being said the one problem I had with 'Suicide Squad' was their portrayal of Killer Croc. The actor they got was WAY too small for the role and just seemed like a waste at the end of the movie. Killer Croc should have been 13 foot tall, ate people and ripped people to shreds and he should NEVER be part of a team. It was the same mistake 'The Dark Knight Rises' by casting a short guy (5'9) to play Bane when they should have cast somebody the size of the Big Show or Kane. Hopefully what we have seen is just Croc in the early stages of his transformation and he is more crocodile and scary in the next movie.

One of my all time favorite action movies is "The Dirty Dozen". Out of the dozen men on the team 6 of them are less relevant as characters than Harley Quinn was in this movie. So I don't see the point. Any movie can be written a hundred different ways with more characters or less characters. They did Suicide Squad the way they did it and a lot of people liked it. And Harley Quinn is the breakout character that is going to be in multiple movies so I really can't fault them for it.
PS. Everyone knows that I'm a huge MCU fan but I don't see this particular criticism of SS as valid.

The only reason Slipknot tried to escape was because Boomerang suggested it. Outside of that, Slipknot didn't even believe it was possible. Like I said before, without Croc, the swat team would have been intercepted by the zombies. It was Croc's defense that helped get the bomb placed on time. Sure, you could take Joker out, but then you don't get the back story of Harley Quinn and the relationship between the two. The audience wouldn't understand what makes Harley tick. Not only that, you would have lost a lot of interest in the film and it probably only makes $300 million instead of $745 million. See the video clip above. Slipknot was used as an example to show that Waller meant business. Not showing what would happen would have left people questioning if they really had the implants or not. If it wasn't him then it would have been someone else. Look, it's pretty obvious that you are either trolling this thread or you don't know how to watch or understand a film. Maybe you should stop before this gets worse.

No, I'm sorry, you're missing the point that having characters do random things occasionally, is not a story.
Answer the question, could you do the story without character X. And the answer for almost all of them is yes.
You don't need slipknot period, you don't need boomerang to convince him of anything, you don't need croc to get the bomb, and random zombies are random.
You could have cut 4 characters out of this film and given the time to 1 other character like Katana to actually develop her and give her an arc and some meaning.
Instead you wound up with a team of meaningless characters who do one random thing the entire film that any other character could have done.
So the bomb is in a flooded hallway at the end, just so small minded people can think Croc was important. No he wasn't.

Seems like it's really hard to defend Suicide Squad, not sure why anyone would try.
