What makes them so great? Seems like everyone fawned over the debut album. Sounds pretty average to me.

Are you saying that they sound average to you today or are we basing this on 1989 standards? Despite being a great album, they were definitely breaking new ground in the 80's.

the debut album. Sounds pretty average to me. WHAT THE FUCKKKKKK!!!! Sounds pretty average to you? Do you look at Dolly Parton's tits and say, "They are pretty average to me"? Dude, there really is no way to explain or convince you of the greatness of that Stone Roses album if you said "sounds pretty average to me." What can I say, really, to someone who feels that way? You are one of the rare few (about 3 people on Earth, really) who don't see the brilliance of that album. You are someone who clearly doesn't enjoy great music. Hey, some people like you dig Jon Bon Jovi stuff, others love great music like The Stone Roses debut LP. My God, you really think that album sounds average? That blows my mind. Is Roger Federer average to you? Shakespeare average to you? An Aston Martin average to you?

To each their own, but it's a brilliant album. One of those rare albums that I can put on and never feel the urge to skip a track.

I'm with you. They had their moments, more than the Mock Turtles (who I'd happily forgotten about for 25 years or so until seeing a mention of a reissue of their atrocious debut album yesterday), but less than Flowered Up. The whole indie/dance crossover shite thing made me extremely tetchy at the time, and still does. I managed to enjoy the Pastels and acid house simultaneously, without ever wishing to combine the two. And I was right. Getting back to the point somewhat, Fool's Gold is pretty good occasionally.

You can shrug all you want. It's your loss. If I were you, I'd buy a copy of the album and listen to it five times daily. You will be cured of your malady. (Further medical advice: do not listen to The Stone Roses second album five times daily. You will relapse.)

I think they had a few decent songs, but not good enough to actually want to buy the album. I hated all the baggy scene at the time, and I don't think much of it has stood the test of time. "Fool's Gold" is a good 'un though. "Sally Cinnamon" would've been a good track if Ian Brown could sing.

Started listening to the debut album again after a long hiatus. Even bought a beautiful 2xLP reissue yesterday. Thanks for the reminder on how great this album is!

So update: I'm giving the debut another listen and I think I finally "get it." It's sounding better than it ever has before.

That CD changed my life. It's started more conversations with strangers, some have become good friends. Definitely one to pack if leaving on a long journey to another planet.
