In many movies and some TV shows, ladies are depicted riding sidesaddle. I can't understand how a woman can remain on the animal, let alone control it in high gallop and jumps.
I understand that a sidesaddle's purpose was to maintain a lady's modesty while riding, but it seems to me both inconvenient and potentially dangerous. Besides, I wonder if some men considered equestiennes "unladylike", especially in fast riding and jumping.
Riding is risky enough astraddle, but it seems to me to be more so with a sidesaddle.
I think mostly of an early scene in UNTAMED (1955), where Katie's horse jumped a fence while she was riding sidesaddle, unhorsing Paul and causing his mount to go lame. He just removed the sidesaddle from her mare, putting his own English saddle on the animal, and rode away, leaving her to walk home. I would have thought that Katie would have been thrown, but it is just a movie, after all.
What are your thoughts on riding sidesaddle?

I remember seeing it for the first time, or should I say I don't. I don't remember if it was a movie or a Tv-episode the first time seeing it, but I remember my first thought, that it looked uncomfortable sitting with a twisted hip, especially if it's a long ride, or the horse have to jump over something. Apparently they could do things like this once, at least at the Sydney Royal Easter Show, 1915. A young Greta Garbo.
