Personally, I felt the film to be pretentious. There's good cinematography and a good score, but using the score over silent dialogue doesn't make a good film. There's nothing special about this story. There have been countless films like this throughout the years but they haven't gotten Academy attention.
It was a complete joke that Mahershala Ali won. There's no excuse for that. He gave a decent performance, but there's nothing Oscar about it. Case in point, if you were watching this movie the first day it was released, before you knew it'd eventually get Oscar buzz, you'd never walk out of the movie thinking, "oh that's an Oscar performance!" It would never cross your mind. It's like Chris Tucker winning Best Actor for Rush Hour - he was good in it.
IMO Mahershala Ali's performance as Juan/Blue was interchangeable with the other 2 adult male characters in the film: Kevin and Chiron being the others. You literally could've written drew any of the 2 names in hat, and nominated the one you picked. It was totally random, as if the Academy was thinking, "we have to nominate someone from this film, who should it be?"
In fact, after watching it, I thought the actor who played Adult Chiron did a good job, adopting the mannerisms as the actors who played his younger selves, that I thought maybe he was the one who had won, and had to look it up to be sure.
This movie is totally, totally, overrated. Never thought the Oscars would cave to diversity for the sake of having diversity, when it's completely unearned. Removing all Academy bias, Manchester by the Sea or LaLa Land would have won.

Then you haven't been paying attention. Hollywood and therefore the Oscars has been pandering for a while now. After all the whining and complaining last year from spoiled millionaires who happened to be slightly swarthy there was ZERO CHANCE that all of this years Oscars would be handed to those that actually deserved them.

I haven't seen it, so I can't comment on the point of your post, but I was wondering what you meant by "silent dialogue." Were the actors mouthing the dialogue but not speaking?
I agree that black actors and productions were probably rewarded this year in large part due to the criticism the Academy received last year, but really it's no different than Leo winning Best Actor last year more for his ouvre than his performance in THE REVENANT or for that matter Bette Davis winning in 1935 for DANGEROUS as a way to make up for not giving her the award for OF HUMAN BONDAGE the year before. A lot of people and productions over the years have received Awards that were not deserved, or that others deserved more.
For what it's worth, I didn't think LA LA LAND or Emma Stone deserved nomination either. I love Emma Stone and I thought LA LA LAND was decent, but neither were particularly spectacular. Just my opinion. Others can disagree.

Whatever, he was good in the film, but he was going to take it home no matter what. Oscars are a joke.

I agree. Joan Fontaine definitely deserved to win for Rebecca, but the Academy gave the award to Ginger Rogers because she'd "gone dramatic" with Kitty Foyle. Fontaine's was a break-out performance, and the Academy corrected their error the next year when she won for the lesser "Suspicion."

I have seen Born to be Bad, and her performance is quite a bit different from what we'd been used to. It was the start of her "icy, bitchy" period, where she played worldly, sophisticated women. I much preferred her heroines with a spine of steel from such classics as Jane Eyre. She reverted to form in Hammer's "The Devil's Own," which was my introduction to Joan Fontaine. It's still one of my favorite Fontaine movies. Have you seen it?

That being said, I thought Moonlight and Manchester By The Sea were both excellent. Birth of a Nation wasn't very good. It has mixed reviews. I don't think Parker's allegations had anything to do with it. It was never Oscar potential. As for Casey, he could have murdered someone and ate their corpse, and still should've won Best Actor. A person's crimes shouldn't be taken into account when deciding on nominations.

I have no intention of ever seeing Moonlight, and neither does hardly anybody else--Its only grossed $20 million, subject matter is a turn off for most everybody

Yes. I agree. Pretentious. We rented this from Redbox last night. I kept thinking - it's good, but was it Best Picture worthy? No. It's a little independent film that could have been shown on network TV. I liked it, but wouldn't buy it or watch it again. I'm a little shallow and tend to like upbeat movies. Like Blanche Dubois says "I don't want reality - I want magic." That's why I watch movies, to be entertained, not to get depressed.
