Personally I don't really care for his style of film making, and I can't quite put my finger on why. Only a few of his films stand out for me, most of them I couldn't care less about.

Outside of the following i would say he's overrated...
1.The Color of Money (1986) - 8/10 2.The Aviator (2004) - 7.5-8/10 3.Casino (1995) 4.After Hours (1985) - 7-7.5/10 -.Gangs of New York (2002) 6.The Departed (2006) - 7/10 -.The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)
but given he's directed seven movies amongst My Favorite Movies in general i can't really say he's all that overrated. but i definitely think his earlier movies (Taxi Driver etc) get way too much credit around IMDb.
p.s. but i think directors like Aronofsky/Fincher get too much credit on IMDb as those are a couple of names that come to mind as nothing Aronofsky did is anything special (The Wrestler is the only one i mildly like) and only one movie of Fincher is of any real worth (i.e. Panic Room) even though i like two of his movies (i.e. Panic Room/The Game).

tastytomatoes It's not that i do it just to do it as i am against people who do that crap. so your definitely mistaken if you think i am 'going against the tide' just to go against people etc. in my case it's simply the fact that there is only 197 movies out of the 2,125+ total movies i have seen (which is less than 10% of everything i have seen) that stand out from the pack (even though there is roughly another 300-400 movies or so beyond those 197 movies that i still like). so with with Scorsese having seven of those movies that's actually doing pretty good as not many can claim to have pulled that off be it actor/actress or director. so actually this is more praise than anything else for Scorsese at the end of the day even though i definitely feel some of his movies are overrated but then again we all have movies we feel get too much credit etc. also, like i have mentioned before... i don't "hate" most good movies and directors it's simply they don't stand out and movies that don't stand out from the pack are pretty much 'just another movie' sorta thing. also, i have said before... most movies i see are decent enough not to have wasted my time it's just that they are not worth re-watching and that's what ultimately makes or breaks movies in the long term. so all i am really doing is filtering out the BS from the truly good movies for me personally. i actually think that's a good thing. i know i am not the only person around here who does not hand out high ratings all of the time either as i feel those who constantly hand out high ratings you can't really tell what they really think stands out from the pack vs just something decent-ish etc as i doubt they really like some of the movies as much as their ratings lead on who can easily find 8's/9's/10's especially after they have seen plenty of movies as i would assume if they went through there movies and really figured out which are really great for them and then the further they get away from that standard the lower the rating then i think they would find they are probably scoring movies a bit too high as i used to score movies a bit too high say 5-10+ years ago but then i went through and fine tuned my rating system etc so i can see what really stands out from the pack for me etc. but with that said... do you personally think most of the movies in the IMDb Top 250, for example, are anything special for you personally? ; i think it's just a fact most movies made are nothing special and only a small portion of them are of any real worth in the long term. with that said... i realize there are movies i personally don't care for that would be recognized by many to be a 'good movie' and all as i guess if your going to come up with a rough standard to judge movies you can probably go by how much a movie $$$ in the theaters or maybe estimate of how many times a movie was watched on TV over the years or maybe a little bit with critics/average people combo etc etc. like how many movies out there are considered classics by a decent portion of the general public? ; that might be a rough standard to go by for what's quality. so when i bottom line Scorsese... i can't really say he's overrated overall (even though there are some of his movies i feel are overrated) when there is seven movies from him amongst My Favorite Movies (i.e. Top 197 movies) which not many actors/actresses/directors could claim that feat

No. Actually, I think he is underrated. He's mostly thought of as being good when he makes mobster movies (mean streets, good fellas, casino), but he's made a lot of other types of movies (after hours, age of innocence, cape fear, kundun), in which he also excelled.
And his "second act" of movies, with DiCaprio (aviator, departed, gangs of new York), are just as brilliant as his earlier stuff. He's one of the few directors who I think has been consistent throughout his career. My only fear is that as old age progresses he'll retire.
How many good movies does a guy have to make throughout his career to convince that he's just plain ol' good? Some other directors that I think are plain ol' good are Spielberg, Fincher and Nolan. Sometimes all the raving is correct.

Lets say a directors entire career was just those 7 movies.. you'd then think he was brilliant, no? That any one person has that many great movies in his repertoire is enough to put him into a fairly high rank.
Look at Frank Darabont... I don't think anyone would put him into the upper echelon of great filmmakers even though he directed what on IMDB and many other lists ranks as maybe the most popular or best film on many "best" lists, Shawshank Redemption.
But he only made one, whereas in your opinion Scorcese's made seven great movies. That's a cup half full to me.

No, because watching Silence was one of the most affecting movie experiences of my life. Cheating it out of the oscars was a crime. It should've won best picture.

Goodfellas alone almost makes him underrated.
So, no, he's not overrated.

overrated in relation to what appraisal? If you said he was one of the best 3 directors of all time, I would disagree. If you say one of the best 50 I'd agree. He is not entirely my cup of tea, but I like most of his movies and he is one of the great and versatile ones.
Also like that he hardly ever sold out to popular franchises...until I heard about that Joker film he will allegedly produce, let's see!

I don't care for many of his films. His repeated flaws are overuse of hit music soundtracks (Goodfellas, Casino) and long-windedness (Gangs of NY, Aviator). I enjoy Casino and King of Comedy, not much else.

I find his most praised movies - the gangster ones - good but a bit overrated.
His faith-based movies, however, Last Temptation and especially Silence - are masterpieces that don't get nearly enough credit.

Definitely. He is praised by the media because his stories are always about a white guy who does bad things and never learns from his mistakes.
He is a good technical director-like Hitchcock, but his employment is entirely due to him providing a message that pleases the studio owners.
The one film where he has a character who does learn from his errors is Nick Nolte in Cape Fear. His relationship with his family improves due to the crisis--however, unlike the original, Nolte's character does not defeat Cady--an act of Nature does (though he puts the handcuffs on Cady's foot-and I think Cady took the handcuffs from a cop?).

He's my second favorite director, so I am going to have to say NO. Ok but was he better when he was coked up a lot? You can say that about de niro for sure. Like in the 80's when he could do all the coke he wanted to, culminating in his most coke fueled movie to date: Goodfellas?
