I think the draft rescued 'Smackdown' which was sinking faster than the Titanic but it's had the opposite effect on 'Raw'. 'Smackdown' had gotten so bad that half of it consisted of backstage interviews, ad breaks and replays but now it provides close to 2 hours of solid entertainment. Young dudes like A J Styles, Dean Ambrose, Bray Wyatt and Baron Corbin are going toe to toe with veterans at the top of their game. John Cena, The Miz and Dolph Ziggler are wrestling week-in, week-out like future Hall of Famers. The loss of Alberto Del Rio was tough to take - he's simply irreplaceable - but Randy Orton appears to be coming into some kind of form again even if he is showcasing the RKO too often. Alexa Bliss, Becky Lynch, Nikki Bella, Natalia Neidhart and Maryse Ouellet are strong competitors but the injury to Naomi highlights the obvious lack of depth in the womens division now that the titles have been split. I say bring in six to eight wrestlers from 'NXT' development and blood them on the big stage, or make some big free agent signings while this brand is hot.
As for the problems with 'Raw'? Well, dividing the rosters risked there being too many matches between the same opponents. The womens' divisions on 'Raw' clearly needs twice as many competitors than they currently have in order to stay fresh and it should include a tag-team division with a title belt up for grabs. The Club and New Day are top-tier performers but the mens' tag-team division is in serious trouble when Big Cass with his horrible sense of timing, and the intensely annoying Enzo Amore, are being massively pushed as contenders to the crown.
'Raw' drafted big guns in order to fill big arenas but some of these stuttering dawgs have been faltering badly. The Big Dog Roman Reigns is "the guy" but his arm drags, arm-wraps, lock & load and superman punch all use that same printed arm he's come to rely so heavily upon. When Bad News Barrett was put out of action the need for more talent became obvious but there's also too many wrestlers performing under par. Meanwhile, Rusev has everything needed to be a Champion yet he can't get a look-in, and top talents like Curtis Axel, Bo Dallas and Hardbody Mahal are treated as whipping boys.
The storylines on 'Raw' have gotten exceptionally weak in recent times. Kevin Owens and Chris Jericho are great but they knew they'd pushed their friendship thing as far as it could go. Besides, it's high time for others to step up. We don't need Brock Lesnar and Bill Goldberg turning up simply to collect massive pay cheques and deliver 20 suplexes and a jackhammer between them. Give more time to those who've come to wrestle.
But, as far as I'm concerned, the worst stories come with those woefully inadequate Cruiserweights who are completely lacking in wit, style, identity and charisma. Hell, bring back Captain Charisma Christian Cage to train these lightweights and teach them what "pleasing the peeps" are all about.
So in summary, I believe there's just not enough content to fill 3 hours at the moment and so much needs fixing. Also, wrestlers need to be traded from time to time, or even make special appearances on their sister shows to freshen things up. That's my general take on things ...
