I think it is still a good show and watch it every season. It isn't as good as it used to be and the quality of the episodes have decreased every season but I will say, I think Season 6 is the last great season of the show and it is very underrated and had a lot of good episodes. Season 7 on the other hand was awful and disappointing. I hate that they killed Cass and Bobby off and I am not sure what their original plans were for the Leviathans but I feel they could have done something bigger and better than what they did. Season 8 was an improvement but after all the rumours how they were going to bring back characters like Ruby, Yellow Eyes and Gabriel through Purgatory it ended up being a disappointment too when they brought back nobody...

By far and away the longest I've ever followed a tv show before gibing up on it. The first and only material I can think of whose problem was that it indeed, it "went on for too long."
Why the dynamic between the brothers was great and carried the show for a number of seasons...was in season 7 or 8 where it just became crystal clear that the writers have absolutely no idea where any of this is leading and are just making it up as they go along. Which led to story-lines and themes being recycled over and over and over again with nothing new added to them whatsoever. To be fair I felt like this for long patches in a number of the seasons, but always felt like I wanted to stick it out until the end. But eventually I just gave up, there is no end in sight, and no matter what the brothers go through, there is no character progress, it all just became pointless and useless.
A big shame what happened to this show, because there was plenty to like, in the earlier seasons at least.
