mikef6 So, is that really a "Trilby" in the Garland image that Bat posted above ? If so... oops. ! Hmmm...not sure. My impression of the trilby is that the short brim is pretty much inflexible. Garland has the brim turned up and down in places, characteristic of the fedora. I would say the best guess is a fedora.

That's it!!! Thanks, Bravo. Remember what Peter Boyle said about that film? "Everything Astaire did, I did backwards and in high heels."

one that comes to mind is that upside down high heeled shoe hat worn by that character actress in Brazil...I forget her name. I believe she also appeared in the sitcom "Soap"
Harpo's silly top hat is another good one. As well as Chico's lid which defies description...
Agnes Moorehead's lid in Summer Holiday
Sherlock Holmes Deerslayer hat
The urban sombrero from Seinfeld
...also need to mention the derby worn by Edward G in Little Caesar

Is there a difference between a bowler and a derby? I guess if you're British, it's a bowler... ...and if you're not, it's a derby: Which leaves these two on both sides of the pond: Joel McCrea was an American in a derby practicing to be British in a bowler in Foreign Correspondent: Because he was Fred Astaire, he could call it anything he wanted (Ginger agrees):

and poor Joel kept losing that bowler, Doghouse. The kids swiped it before he sailed, he left it in the cab while interviewing Van Meer, the wind took it next to the windmill. Oh well, he looked better in the fedora anyway.
