Ever read the book? Greatest sports movie? Raging Bull. Period. End of discussion. Yeah - I heard the ending of the book is 'quite' different than the movie. Love Raging Bull. Own it. Give it a watch at least once a year. Ending scene of a broken down old bloated LaMotta talking to himself in the mirror is haunting/epic/sad. Scene where he lets his guard down and challenges Sugar Ray to beat on him is one of the greatest scenes in all of movies. Used to own the movie poster as a kid. Raging Bull is an excellent choice, I always say this but I've never seen a bad boxing film, it must be a genre that is almost impossible to mess up, I mean God knows that they tried their best to fuck it up with Rocky V, but even that was ooo-kay.

Cinderella Man is one of my favorite movies of All-Time. awesome musical score too.

Your pick? Go! I can't pick just one but my faves are: The Natural. As you pointed out. The Longest Yard. And not the crappy remake. Sandler as a QB? WTF? Yeah, right. Reynolds was much more believable as a former pro QB. My most favorite sports movie of all time would be Breaking Away. Especially since I recently found out that my bicycle happens to be the same Italian brand of Masi as the one in the movie. Which you can see at 2:22 in the preview.

Anyway, the correct answer to the question is 'The Damned United', about the legendary Brian Clough. I believe it has actually been scientifically proven that this is the greatest sport's film of all time. I watched this before and enjoyed it a lot. I thought I read that it played loose with the facts.

Rocky IV Is that Stallone?!? In a soccer movie - 5 years after Rocky no less?!? WTF!?! Looks like a British version of 'The Longest Yard'. Awesome stuff - I never even heard of it. This is the British version of The Longest Yard gotta be honest here. apollo's death really screwed me up - had tears in my eyes as a kid just like when Mick died in Rocky III

That's true (even though I only like the first Rocky). The Champ (Wallace Beery), Somebody Up there Likes Me, The Harder They Fall. Even great movies that have boxing as a plot element. The Killers, Pulp Fiction, On the Waterfront

Without giving it too much thought, these are some sports movies that I enjoyed. I wouldn't necessarily vote for any of them as "The Greatest Sports Movie of All Time" though.
The Karate Kid, if that counts – silly high school movie, I know, but I loved it when it came out Rush – I know many people didn’t like it, but I thought it was pretty decent. The Miracle of Bern – German movie about their first World Cup win, when the country was still recovering from the end of the war, just nine years earlier. Maurice Richard – biopic of the Montreal Canadiens idol and icon.
There was a Korean table tennis movie that I watched during a flight some years ago that I quite liked too – it was based on the true story of South and North Korea fielding an unified team for an upcoming championship.
El Camino de San Diego, not a sports film per se, but one that I really loved. It’s about a poor man from some backwater in Argentina who, upon hearing that Diego Maradona is having a serious health crisis, decides to travel to Buenos Aires to present his idol with a sculpture that he made.

I thought TheGoodMan19 ended the discussion. It had a period and everything at the end.

I believe it has actually been scientifically proven that this is the greatest sport's film of all time. I watched this before and enjoyed it a lot. I thought I read that it played loose with the facts. It was the book that was essentially fiction. They actually got sued by Johnny Giles (successfully), but as none of the other characters were still alive, the families couldn't sue for libel. (You can't libel a dead man). The Clough family were certainly very upset with the book. The film put Brian Clough across in a more sympathetic light than the book, I think the Clough family were more okay with the film than the book. I mean, of course with these kinda films you are always going to have to embellish a bit, but most of the events happened, just maybe slightly different to how the film portrays. Like the interviews with Clough in the studio and his showdown with Don Revie are a little bit different on youtube as to how they are in the film, but I think they captured the mood if not the script being word for word accurate.

Maybe more a love story than a sports movie in the classical sense, but my favourite has always been "Bull Durham".
A recent one I like a lot is "Warrior".
And I will always have a soft spot for "Major League".

Favorite scene from Warrior: Mad Dog Vs. Tommy

Favorite scene from Warrior: Mad Dog Vs. Tommy Agreed! It got great reviews, but was probably overlooked by many due to the sport it portrays and its - admittedly - paint-by-numbers and cheesy storyline (estranged brothers end up fighting for the title! something the trailer didn't hide in the slightest). One of the things that amazes me about Warrior, is how it manages to be so gripping, even though it's pretty obvious how it's going to end. And what a fantastic cast: Joel Edgerton, Tom Hardy, Nick Nolte, Frank Grillo. My favourite scenes are Nick Nolte listening to Moby Dick in his room and Tom Hardy coming to his rescue: And the last 4 minutes. The music, Joel Edgerton and Nick Nolte's "exchange" and the latter's slight nod at 00:26, Nick Nolte's tears at 3:38 as he looks onto his sons, and his smile, nod and sense of closure at 4:07 are all fantastic and give me goosebumps every time:

Makes you feel like you got punched in the stomach. I loved the beach scene too with Brendan and Tommy. Brendan's trying to explain to him that he fell in love and has kids - Tommy feels like he abandoned him and his Mom. Dialogue is heart wrenching - Brendan - 'I'm your brother.' Tommy - 'You were in the corps? - then you ain't no brother of mine'

ESCAPE TO VICTORY - tremendous pick! Enjoyed this movie immensely -- great storyline, strong performances, dramatic and comedic moments, and exciting action sequences!
