Harvey Keitel was born on May 13th, 1939 in Brooklyn, New York, USA - the son of Miriam & Harry, Jewish emigrants from Romania and Poland. He joined the United States Marine Corps and was stationed in Lebanon. Keitel studied under both Stella Adler and Lee Strasberg.

Harvey Keitel

Keitel was cast to play Captain Willard in Francis Ford Coppola's war movie 'Apocalypse Now' (1979) when Al Pacino turned down the role. Keitel started filming in the Philippines but tensions ran high. Coppola was not happy and fired Keitel. He instead hired Martin Sheen of Dayton, Ohio who'd auditioned for the role of Michael Corleone in Coppola's 'The Godfather' (1972) which eventually went to Pacino. Keitel struggled with life in the 1980s but worked with filmmakers from around the globe. He continued to work on stage which made him happy. He received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for Barry Levinson's 'Bugsy' (1991) which gave his career a boost. The following year, Keitel played a scary mobster in the smash hit 'Sister Act' (1992). His casting in Quentin Tarantino's 'Reservoir Dogs', which he co-produced, took his career to another level. Since then, Keitel has applied the "1-2" rule; do one film for the money and that allows you to make two films for yourself. In 1999, Keitel was replaced by Sydney Pollack on the set of Stanley Kubrick's 'Eyes Wide Shut' (1999), due to "shooting conflicts".

Al Pacino & Robert De Niro

Keitel has appeared in music videos for Jay-Z & Beyoncé. He is currently married to indie icon Daphna Kastner who starred in Bashar Shbib's influential indie classic 'Julia has Two Lovers' (1991). He was once in a longterm relationship with actress Lorraine Bracco. Along with fellow New Yorker Al Pacino and actress Ellen Burstyn of Detroit, Michigan, Keitel is the current co-president of the Actors Studio.
